I was so impressed with this memorial. The statue itself is massive and impressive but reading all of the quotes is also part of the experience. It is very well done.

The new MLK Monument is breathtaking as you approach and walk into the parted 2 mountains on granite. you are directly looking at the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial and then you turn back around to see Martin Luther King emerging from the granite mountain.
The quotes along the opposing walls were very well done an they were kept to his quotes and not other black leaders of the times.
DO NOT come into the monument from the sides it will diminish the effect of the memorial

I accompanied my younger brother on a field trip to DC. While we were going to see all of the monuments and memorials in the area (Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam Wall, etc.), I was particularly excited about the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. My younger brother had helped collect money for the fund a few years ago, so he was excited too.

At first, I thought it was in a strange location: right on Independence Avenue across the street from the DC War Memorial. I guess I thought it would be in a more grand location and more centralized to the Mall. But trust me, it's in a perfect place.

Right as you walk up to its from Independence, you come through two large rock formation. As you walk though, you see the centralized portion is actually the memorial of MLK Jr. himself. "Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope" it says on the side. As you get closer, you see that the memorial is actually right across the Tidal Basin from the Jefferson Memorial. How symbolic. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

And there he stands. Proud and strong, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Memorial looks toward Jefferson as if it say, "We did it."\

It is definitely a different memorial. It's quiet and not nearly as extravagant as the Lincoln or even Jefferson Memorials. It probably won't even get nearly as many visits, but that's ok. The fact that the memorial is even there is enough. For those DC tourists that have an extra bit of time to take stroll across the street, the MLK Jr. Memorial is a beauty--and extremely moving.
