“Getting better every time”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

Around the Arena stage, there is only one good restaurant for pre-theater dining that is convenient to the theater (One block away). Station 4 has been working that niche for a while now, so my wife and I , with our theater friends, are pretty regular customers. A year or two ago, the pre-theater dining at Station 4 was pretty chaotic. Food was served late and it was not remarkable; the service seemed confused. What a difference a little repetition makes! Our last two meals at Station 4 have been excellent. There has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of the food as well as the service. In our last experience, our waiter closely and politley supervised the food runners to make sure that plates were served to the correct person and that utensils were present. The Rockfish special, served in a tomato broth with shrimp, clams and mussels was a georgeous presentation and a taste treat. The rack of Lamb (only 3 chops, tho) was also just plain excellent. We had an all-around superb dining experience and commend the restaurant for its improvement. We really look forward to eating there now. Sometimes the dining is better than the play!

The restauarnt does seem to have done away with the valet parking, but with tools like Park Mobile and the many parking kiosks in the neighborhood, valet parking is not really necessary any more.

“Tries hard but prone to kitchen meltdowns”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

We have dined at this restaurant on multiple occasions, for lunch, brunch, and dinner. The food is generally quite good, and the waitstaff strives mightily. However, problems arise on occasion, especially when the kitchen is under pressure. This seems to be especially true when a pre-theater crowd is dining at Station 4 before attending a show at nearby Arena Stage. In September, we enjoyed a pre-show meal with no problems, but overheard loud and frequent complaints from two tables near us about slow food -- very slow food. When we returned for another pre-show dinner in November, we booked a reservation with plenty of extra time built-in, just in case. As it turns out, we needed every minute of our time cushion. We discussed our menu selections with our waiter, and made sure that nothing would require an inordinate amount of time to prepare. Nonetheless, the elapsed time between our appetizer and our main course was over one hour. We had a view of the pick-up counter, and could see ranks of frustrated waiters constantly checking with the kitchen to see if their orders were ready, only to be turned away empty-handed. An offer by the restaurant manager of a free drink was appreciated, but did little to help us get fed before our curtain time. In the end, because we had allowed ourselves an hour more than we normally would schedule for a simple dinner, we managed to make our curtain time with 5 minutes to spare, but we had to skip dessert to achieve that! Because this is one of the only upscale restaurants in its neighborhood, it remains quite popular, but they are losing goodwill that they may need later when redevelopment brings more competition to the area...

“Close to Arena Stage & Metro”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

We went to a 2PM play at Arena Stage and chose this restaurant to dine at afterwards. The location was perfect, especially since it is located one block away from Arena Stage and directly across the street from the Waterfront metro stop.
We planned to order from the menu until we heard the specials. We ordered the cauliflower soup and the rockfish with cauliflower, along with a side order of green beans. The food (including the bread) was served hot and our waiter was attentive. We enjoyed the ginger cheesecake.
If you do not like to be intimately close to other diners, arrive early before the dining room fills up. We felt the portion sizes were appropriate if you desire to eat several courses. Will return!

“Cozy little urban eatery in SW quadrant”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

It was a last minute decision to walk to Station 4 for a late dinner. Even though they were setting up for a group of more than 20, we were seated quickly and the waitress took our drink order. With a nice wine list to choose from, I ordered a glass of the Northstar, a red of Washington state fame. My friends drank margaritas, which they enjoyed.

We'd heard the pizza's were great, so three of us ordered them and one of us got the chicken cordon bleu, which was tasty chicken medallions with a rich hunter glaze. The pizzas were delicious; we had the margherita, the Station 4 and one that had goat cheese and thin sliced proscuitto (that was the best of the lot, with a tangy and sweet flavor). Bread with oil and balsamic vinegar kept us going until the mains arrived.

All in all a nice little meal with good service. To go boxes were had by all with discussion of another trip to eat at Station 4 in the future. Hip ambiance, with a dark, urban vibe made it a great place to hang out with friends and share stories and good eats.

“Good Pre-Theater Option”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

Place was stylish, and offered a 3 course prix fixe for $35 for the theatre crowd, which was a great option. The steak frites were excellent. Drinks were good, about $12 for the "fancy" cocktails. The food came out quickly, which was nice. Service was good, if a little inattentive. We never did get the water we asked for - minor thing, but really, restaurants should have that sort of thing under control.

Probably would return again before the next Arena Stage outing.
