“Hospitality Delivered at a Fair Price”
Reviewed April 8, 2011

From the moment we checked into this HIE DC we felt the desire for customer satisfaction coming from the management and staff.

We found the accommodations roomy, modern, comfortable and clean, also made even better by the non-smoking policy throughout the hotel. A great hot and cold buffet, kept refreshed by excellent staff, is served in the morning and is one of the best complimentary breakfasts I have ever eaten. Coffee is always available, and there is even an area with snacks, frozen meals, (microwave & fridge in some rooms) ice cream and drinks at very fair prices. The hotel has an attractive and comfortable lobby with areas for talking, intimate business conferencing, a computer room, large TV with seating and tables.

Driving in DC is awful, not to mention parking. Just pay the nominal daily rate, leave your car behind and opt for the free shuttle provided in the morning and late afternoon thru 10PM. (Just make sure you know exactly where at Union Station the van picks up.) In line with their service policy, just let the front desk know you are interested in using the shuttle and they will let you know if an ‘unscheduled’ shuttle is going to Union Station. Once there, the Metro line is easy, clean and affordable and Union Station has great shopping indoors and walking outside…and you can get to any train connection or bus to see any of the sites and museums. (We just loved the Smithsonian American History Museum and being on the jury for the trial of America's Traitor)

There is also plenty to do while in the hotel. The gym is good, the indoor pool warm and you can get to meet people staying from all over the world. During the breakfast buffets, we asked others to join our table when most tables were busy. It gave my husband and I an opportunity to share some good ole American hospitality with a German couple and two UK friends who were traveling together. The atmosphere is friendly and it is easy to strike up conversations. When in DC, this is where we will only stay. HIE DC is not a place that takes advantage of its guests…it is one that works hard to keep its ‘Hospitality Promise.’

If you are in for business or education, stay away. This is a party-hotel that appeals to an edgy clientele. In our stay it was home to a late-night clubbing and college binging crowd. We got little sleep. We were threatened in the elevator. Our room was broken in to WHILE WE WERE SLEEPING! This is not a safe or secure hotel and not worth the risk. The management drivel we have received from the corporate people since our complaints are nothing short of condescending. We had a number of staff at this hotel to "save budget". If your goal is business. STAY AWAY. If your goal is partying, party on!

We were a little worried about the area, but the hotel and staff were exemplary. With the efficient and regular shuttle service to Union Station, and the great staff and cleanliness of the property, we enjoyed our stay and would happily stay there again.

Hi, I use Trip Advisor for honest reviews so I offer one here. I selected the Holiday Inn Express Washington DC for a Friday and Saturday night primarily for the location and reported amenities. The hotel offered a reported free shuttle to the Union Station, and we were going to use the Metro, and avoid the parking nightmare in DC My family and I were going to DC to visit the Smithsonian and then Mt. Vernon on the way home. First the photos of the hotel must be an incredibly close shot, as the area itself is very rundown, and honestly considered the “hood.”

First the good, the hotel physically was nice, clean, and the staff very nice. Now the reality. During our visit, two armed security guards were assigned to the inside of the hotel, both nights. There were hall parties, and on the 2nd night, the rap music was so loud that it came through the door, walls, etc. We called the front desk and an hour later it was addressed. We tried to use the shuttle, however on both occasions requested the same (2 hours) early and were told that it was full. So we did have to drive and park in DC, which we hoped to avoid.

The reality is that the area is not safe outside the immediate confines of the hotel, to even cross the street to go to the service station. You would have to drive elsewhere. The Holiday Inn Express charges $15.00 a day to park, and then even adds another $2.00 for the parking tax.

If you are not from DC and planning to visit, I would recommend staying in Old Towne Alexandria, which is safe and has Metro access. We were hoping to shorten the commute, but would not stay at the hotel again.

I stayed here for an MLG tournament for 2 nights. I had 2 rooms and had requested they be near each other and on the same floor. However, one was on the main floor and one on an upper floor. Other than that, the check-in was nice (the manager I believe). Breakfast was good and well stocked. The rooms were a good size and quiet. Location was not the best for what I needed but not too far from amenities. There is a gas station very near which was excellent for the morning! I would stay here again.

Since HI Express is their budget brand, I was surprised at how great the room was - seriously a 4-star quality.

Just keep in mind the location's not great. I should have paid a bit more to stay next to a subway station!
