Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
Ranked #14 of 483 things to do in Washington DC

Beautiful overall and especially for the honors ceremony when we had seats (they kicked us out to re-make the altar for the next ceremony and I missed our pews!

Be warned, during mass they use a tremendous amount of incense - not at all good for asthma sufferers

Run, don’t walk to visit

You will want to spend your time in place, you might even feel compelled to sit and wonder, pondering the great and powerful love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Oh, yeah, and you'll see every icon of every title you've ever heard of the Holy Blessed Mother of God.
Mass at the Crypt church is extraordinary, Mass at the Upper Church will expand your Spirit, reconciliation will reunite you to God and you might even be blessed enough to get some spiritual direction! You will see nuns, monks, students, teachers and seekers,. You will feel the breath of God, and you will hear Angels sing!

This is a beautiful church with many beautiful and historical side rooms. This is accessible by Metro, and then walk 4-5 blocks. All people may, at the least, respect and appreciate the beauty of the place, but Catholics may feel “awed” in God’s presence!

We went to noon Sunday Mass and then a tour at 1:30. The Basilica is stunningly beautiful.....mosaics, statues, side chapels,paintings...). After Mass we went downstairs to get self guided tour audio players. They work well, allow you to progress at your own speed only stopping at the Tour points you’re interested in and are free (your driver’s license is retained as collateral).
