I am so glad we decided to check out the Eastern Market over Memorial Day weekend. While as some posters have suggested it is a typical farmers market, there are plenty of other things to check out. Besides the fresh produce available, there was a flea market going on and some very good food available. Since we were travelling we didn't buy anything but the real draw was the lunch in the main building. I wanted to get breakfast but they were not serving that on the weekends. Instead we had the crab cake sandwich and it was fantastic! I would go back over and over just to eat that - and it was very cheap as well. You order at the counter, pick up your sandwich, eat and go. Pretty simple. Keep in mind that it's cash only.
The rest of the market was neat just to walk around and mingle. Well worth it if you are looking for something local to do while in DC.

When you are in DC don't miss the breakfast in Eastern Market: very good sea food for very low price!

Eastern Market on a fall afternoon is a delightful way to spend several hours enjoying a variety of intriguing artisans and vendors, fully functioning food market with purveyors offering, fresh chicken, beef, pork, cheese, flowers, etc..and a fascinating flea market. A great variety of dining options are available for every taste and the ambiance of old DC neighborhood with broad streets, lofty trees and stately, authentic 4-story brick rowhouses- all in impeccable condition- make one want to reconsider city living.

Just a basic farmers market you'd find in any city. Not worth a special trip to see. On our way back to the hotel, we happened upon a Thursday only street market at McPherson Square, which was small but superb. Fresh, organic meats, vegetables, dairy and other goodies. Worth a visit if you're staying within walking distance of McPherson Sq. And remember it's only Thursday afternoons. Not worth a special trip if you're not nearby - I mean, fresh and appealing as the goods may be, they are of little use to you as a visitor unless you want to cook in your hotel room!

When any member of my large extended family visits Washington, the first thing they want to do is go to Eastern Market. Inside the old, and recently completely renovated, market building you will find a great lunch counter with some of the best breakfasts and lunches in town (try to "bluebucks" pancakes or the crabcake sandwich). There are also vendors of fine seafood, meat, produce, flowers, fresh pasta, and prepared foods. On weekends, an eclectic mix of vendors set up outside and across the street. Farmers from surrounding areas bring in their fresh produce, craftspeople and artists sell their wares, and a sort of international flea market takes place--everything from antiques to countless jewelry options. You'll find some great buys on one-of-a-kind merchandise, too. Eastern Market is truly a treasure that everyone from tiny kids to grandparents will enjoy.
