“Helpful staff with a smile!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013 via mobile

A last minute business trip and The Churchill is where I ended up! What a pleasant surprise!
I was in a very large king suite with a separate little office area- although my room faced Connecticut Ave. there wasn't as much traffic noise as I expected!
The staff, especially Steven at the front desk and Humberto who brought me my coffee each morning, were very pleasant, professional and very accommodating.
Don't miss the view of the Washington Monument when you walk out front and look right! Spectacular view from atop the hill!

My wife and I (and many friends, in separate rooms) stayed here for a weekend wedding in the area. The hotel is historic and comfortable feeling, without being rundown. Our room was very small, but did have a good sized bathroom. The suite a friend had was very large, with a comfortable sitting area, but had a tiny bathroom. Depending on your priorities, that seems to be the choice in room types. The turn down service was pretty poor in my opinion. Our bed was sloppily made at 4pm, and only after a call down to the front desk. There was also trash left in our room, despite us not being messy people. The rehearsal dinner and day after brunch were held at the hotel, and the food was pretty good. Our wedding rate made the hotel very affordable, but I feel that the size of the room and turn down service would lead me to stay elsewhere next time I am in DC.

This is an old hotel with all the quirks (and not much of the quaintness) that goes along with that. It's 100 years old, so of course the floors squeak and the room had a weird layout. It seemed OK for cleanliness but it wasnt maintained to a high standard. The windows for example were incredibly dirty, so much so, that you could hardly see out of them. I found the food at the restaurant to be not good. Salmon was burned for instance and the salad tasted bad.

Overall my stay at the Churchill was mediocre.

The staff was friendly and helpful, the best aspect of the hotel. The room, on the smaller side for American hotels, was fine, if a bit shabby. The cleaning during my stay was generally good but missed a few areas not in the middle of the room.

The biggest issue was the room temperature - it was definitely chilly, and turning up the heat did nothing - the air coming out was barely tepid. I overheard two other guests complaining about temperatures as well, with one guest saying her room was so cold she slept in her clothes.

Overall, I would stay here again, although maybe not in extreme temperatures.

The Churchill is a beautiful old building with nice rooms and a good location if you need to be near the embassy area, and it's not far from the National Zoo. The Dupont Circle Metro station is about a half mile away and the Woodley Park Zoo Metro is a little further away. For sightseeing, this is a good location and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. It's a bit of a walk (and you can use the Metro) from the White House, Smithsonian area, etc. But it's a nice hotel and could be an option for tourists as well as business travelers.

For the money, good value. DC has loads of 3.5-4 * hotels, but for this location, it's quiet and serene setting is better than the chains. Downside is Internet not free and staff rather surly - they cater to "embassy families" and seem overworked. But hey, we're there for the sights, sounds and tastes in DC which is an increasingly new and fresh culinary delight. Overall good experience as we're out and about all day so the interaction needs are limited.

Room Tip: Ask for Connecticut Ave facing rooms rather than inner courtyard.

I booked The Churchill as a "change" from nearby modern hotels (chains)in the Embassy Row area, booked for my/our frequent visits to the Capital over the years and was not disappointed. It is an 8-story renovated former high-end apartment for diplomats, politicians, etc. built in the early 20th century with Beaux Art architecture. It faces the monstrous Washington Hilton (a good place to stay too but large, large, large with frequent mega-conventioneers.) So there is an Old World sense to The Churchill. We had a pleasant junior suite King, well-laid out, great bed and amenities. The deal that we had included a free cocktail and a free breakfast but, unfortunately, neither the bar service nor the breakfast host appeared to know anything about these benefits that appeared on their web site when I booked directly with them! Somewhat of a hassle to "collect" but we did. Otherwise the staff were accommodating. The room and tax per night was what I considered to be quite high normally for area hotels in the Dupont Circle/Embassy Row area. (Note: other than our freebie from breakfast was not included...normally.) Of course it was Spring and late season for Cherry Blossom tourism and Spring breaks. Reservations are difficult, demand is high. A final note: contrary to their web site misleading claim that it is "steps from Dupont Circle metro station, the hotel's location is a long uphill walk from that station station and one should consider the more pleasant nearly equidistant walk downhill from the Woodley Park station (Adam Hays neighborhood), one stop up from Dupont Circle on the Red Line. We're fit but in our 70s. The other option is to take the bus up Connecticut or a taxi, obviously. There are plenty of ethnic restaurants in Dupont Circle/Conn. Ave neighborhood, as well as north of the hotel, some high-end, and up to the Adam Hays neighborhood. In fact, if one decides to get off at Woodley Park station near dinner time, I'd recommend dining at one of the Thai, Indian or Afghan restaurants nearby---or one of the more traditional American emporiums; there's even a good Irish pub and grub adjacent to the station.
