Description: Hill Country is coming to DC! Named "Best Barbecue in NY" by both New York Magazine and Time Out New York, "Top 10 Barbecue in the U.S." by the Wall Street Journal and "Best New Restaurants of the Year" by New York Magazine, Hill Country takes its "cue" from legendary Texas barbecue joint Kreuz Market and its distinctive dry-rub style. Hill Country's brisket, sausage, ribs and other meats are smoked low and slow over Texas post oak. The barbecue is served in butcher paper, counter-style by the pound, with traditional trimmings.

“Good Food and the Big Red is Great!”

If you are from Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma or Texas you will know Big Red (Cherry Cream Soda what's not to love). This is the only place in DC that I am aware of that you can get it. The meals here are large and tasty so think about splitting one.

Food was great! Ribs were perfect and you pick exactly how much you want. Kinda family style only done in a big texas way! Very cool and happy we stopped on. Live country band too.

“Not terrible, not great, not recommended”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

I really didn't like the style of this restaurant, and the food was not good enough to overcome that style and the high price. You must get up from the table and run through a cafeteria style line to order and receive food. My sandwich was slovenly wrapped in paper. The meat was quite fatty and not all that tasty. The BBQ sauce on the table was decent, and the habenero was okay but not overly spicy. I would have preferred other sauce choices in addition. Cornbread was decent. Beans were mediocre. There's better BBQ at lower prices elsewhere, and there are a ton of choices in the Penn Quater/Chintown area. I suggest you look elsewhere.

“Old, cold meat”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

I live in Richmond va and love me some good BBQ. Was in town for business and wanted to give this place a try.
First the good. The sides are really good. Mac n cheese. Green beans. And more.
The bad. The meat was old and cold. The meat was tuff and lacked any taste to it.
If you like BBQ stay away.

“Interesting Mix in a Cafeteria Style Restaurant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2013

Had a quick dinner meeting there to catch up with some extended family while in town. This place has a diverse clientele; from bubbas just looking for some good bbq to politicians celebrating a birthday. It was plenty loud, but not too bad and I think anyone would feel comfortable here. It is a little odd that it is cafeteria style, seems like you could order just as easy since they take your drink order at the table but I guess that is part of the charm. Pretty tasty and affordable.
