I've been twice to the taproom in the basement. Pretty sweet giant man-cave. Great selection of beers on tap. Also has a pool table, darts, video games, and lots of screens tuned to sports. Finger food is pretty good too. Wait staff is friendly and helpful.

Sunday Brunch is a favored event in our household. Our outing to Jake's had several textures.

Spouse loved the blueberry pancakes - with a load of bacon. I ordered pork chops and a Bloody Mary.

Bloody Mary was overly spicy and pork chops came with a (Cajun?) seasoning. Home Fries good. Service was also good. Music too loud, however. Artwork is interesting.

our second trip to Jake's made a much better impression than the first (soon after it opened), but still not great.

The bar and table service was very friendly and efficient. the food came out in timely manner. our table was comfortable. they have a good tap beer selection. we enjoyed the ginger mussels - cleaned and cooked well with a strong ginger taste (perhaps just a tad too much). nice broth. the classic wedge salad was good as was the hosue salad. the hummous appetizer was fine, not spectacular. it didn't taste like homemade hummous. the steak frites was good, cooked medium rare as we liked and the white truffle fries tatsy.

the bread seems pedestrian. it looks and tastes like they are the pedestrian parkerhouse rolls you buy from giant all squished together at thanksgiving time. they should do something much healthier and delicious than soft white bread rolls. they couldn't even soak up well the mussel juice as they had no density and structure. the bread collapsed the moment they met the liquid.

we'll not see Jake's out but will probably return (we have heard brunch is good) as it is close to a daughter's house. hope it continues to make improvements.

The area around Politics and Prose, one of D.C.'s largest and most successful independent bookstores, has been woefully short of casual dining options for years, disappointing those of us who would love to grab a bite before or after a reading. Jake's fills that void. The menu has lots of salad andwich/burger options as well as some more ambitious choices, and the brunch is outstanding -- big fluffy pancakes with fresh blueberries, a lovely eggs benedict dish, spicy pork chops and eggs, and bottomless bloody mary/mimosa options. We will definitely go back.
