We went here to celebrate my husband's birthday, which we mentioned when asked if it was a special occasion when making reservations. We were seated at a table by the computer that the servers use to log orders, so it didn't seem too intimate an area. The atmosphere was nice, but kind of stuffy. Service was attentive. My husband got the sliced filet mignon and I got a fish dish that was one of the daily specials. It was good, but not great. I anticipated he might get a little dessert for his birthday, but no such luck. Why did they bother asking if it was a special occasion? The adjacent table had a large group celebrating a birthday and we had a nice conversation with them and discovered that some of them reside where we are originally from. They even bought us a glass of wine and helped make the evening memorable and fun. Didn't notice any D.C. power brokers there, but our server said Michele Bachman had dined there the previous evening. Thank goodness she wasn't in attendance when we were there, or it would have ruined the entire experience :)

Finally a restaurant where there is something for everyone and the chefs will even make a custom order with no extra charge. So vegetarians can feel welcome. And an added plus is that the noise level is quiet which is unusual for most places here in DC.

Even during a shut down, Washington DC is a busy town. The Capital Grille was bustling when we arrived and despite confirmed reservations, we had to wait over 30 minutes for our table. A cabinet member with 3 Secret Service Agents (1 in front, 2 behind) swept into the place and was ushered to his private room in the back immediately. Another party, which didn't have reservations, was seated ahead of us. We declined to wait in the bar and buy drinks. We had plans to order wine with dinner. We didn't need to be up-sold. Once seated, the food and service were excellent, however, the sense that we were not important enough to be seated in a timely fashion is a taste that doesn't go down well.

We were very fortunate to be able to co to the Capitol Grille during a recent visit to Washington DC. It is very difficult to get reservations, so call early. We attended in a small group and were greeted by the amazing and friendly staff. We were then shown to our table where our server then took over. Bob was wonderful the entire night!

The house speciality was the sirloin which is aged in house. The steak was very good, but not "over the top amazing". The salads, sides, and deserts were all delicious. We especially liked the creamed corn, potatoes, and asparagus. A few in our group got the filet Oscar, and the loved it. Desert was also very good. The prices are high so don't be surprised.

Overall this was a wonderful dining experience, made even better by our server's exceptional service.
