We reserved it through our Representative a couple of weeks in advance. It was quite crowded but not uncomfortable. Extremely well organized staff. You only get to see the Visitor Center, not the Capitol itself, but the art and architecture by themselves are amazing.

I loved the movie before starting the tour. We had a private tour so I can't speak to that. Visiting the chambers is very interesting. Its so different than seeing it on CSPAN! Also we used the tunnel to walk to the Library of Congress. Made a short visit there. Check in with your state senators/reps and see if/when they have special visits for your state constituents. Our senators have donuts every Tuesday morning with constituents!

...all designed to dissaude you from realizing that you are just one of the millions of cattle herded through here every year. Which, in fact -- this is Congress, after all -- you are.

(Yes, they spent trillions of our tax dollars to build this hole, and yet, you can't influence them unless you yourself are a millionaire -- in which case, you are ushered through a more traditional entrance -- because your regular-Joe taxpayer contributions can never equal the trillions they collect from, and enrich themselves with, monied special interests...who in fact actually run this show).

They won't tell you but, begun before and then re-designed after September 11, if there's a terrorist strike and you're down in there, you will be sealed off from the world, from exit, and, more importantly, FROM THEM.

We pre arranged a tour and our congresswoman, Mary Bono, greeted us in her office and made us feel welcomed! We saw our congress in action and met several other congressmen! A must do!

This huge space under the capitol building is quite a treasure. I'm not that taken with the displays in the glass cases---often it is too dark to see what they are trying to show---but behind the cases are four or five models of DC from its early days to the present. It is fascinating to see how the city has grown.
