Although I've only gone once, I do plan to go again. Lunch menu was fine and enjoyed real fried chicken, and found interesting twist with the corn bread. It was very good! Go.

On a cold, gray, recent Thursday a friend and I ducked into the warmth (surprising, given it's cavernous space) of Eatonville for a lunch. It did not disappoint. The service was attentive and friendly but not overbearing. We shared the delicious Hush-puppy appetizer and then both had the Southern Fried Chicken, which was tasty, moist, and enormous. A fantastic unique dish which left us both very satisfied. All this surrounded by the buzz of one of DC's hottest "up-and-coming" neighborhoods (often referred to as "14th and U," in reference to intersection at the heart of the district). Also, this place is very close to downtown - maybe a 5 minute taxi ride in the middle of a work day. So whether you are visiting DC for business or as a tourist and want to explore the city beyond the monuments, this is a great place to try for a lunch or dinner.

Eatonville is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The recently changed their menu and I hope they continue to keep their regulars on their toes. The food is great for the price. Don't expect huge portions though! They drink specials and main entrees specials weekly. You must have the mac and cheese and the corn bread! Yummy!!! No matter what entree we get, we always start off with corn bread with a side of mac & cheese. The mixed drinks are on the "light side." However, the drinks are decently priced. The ambiance is quite nice. Great large colorful paintings all over the place adds some flare. Sometimes there is live music, which can make it difficult to have a conversation. Otherwise, I highly recommend it!

We were greeted by our server who was warm and friendly. She made excellent recommendations. I had "wrapped in rainbows" a drink with cherry vodka, Courvoisier, guava juice and ruby porto. It was delicious, low alcohol, fruity and sweet. The mint julep was also sweet and low alcohol. Regular martinis and manhattans available. Our server explained the murals and drink names to us (wrapped in rainbows is one mural and the title of Zora Neale Hurston's biography by Valerie Boyd). Our server recommended the cornbread muffins and fried green tomatoes, both excellent. The crispy coating and basil oil and saffron aioli made the tomatoes memorable. We also had fried chicken: I'm still wondering how they got the chicken so moist and flavorful and the coating so crispy. The mac and cheese and collards were also delicious. The mac and cheese was a just a reason for eating melted cheese and cream. We had a parfait and very good coffee. I can't wait to bring friends here. Our server's timing was a little off, but she more than made up for it with great recommendations, knowledge and warmth.

There may be no joy in writing a bad review, but I’m going to do that for two reasons. One, writers who have contributed bad reviews haven’t been specific. And two, this place has so much potential given its ownership by the people who bring us the wonderful Busboys and Poets. First the good: Great location, great décor, an energetic crowd and vibe, and attentive wait staff. Now the bad: The food is not good. Slider appetizer was unremarkable, and it was downhill from there. The entre-portioned salad with fried chicken came out the size of a small dinner salad with a virtually undetectable amount of chicken and was immediately sent back. I ordered two appetizers in its place. The giant hushpuppy stuffed with shrimp was different but underwhelming. The mac & cheese was a bland gooey mess that we couldn’t eat. The baby-back ribs are boiled to the consistency of mush and served with a slathering of overly sweet sauce. From someone who cooks ribs at home, I can tell you that there’s a difference between “fall off the bone” and “fell to pieces.” The ribs at a certain chain restaurant known by a four letter acronym (and generally referred to as a certain day of the week) are better. We saw that many people were ordering the same items—fried chicken and fried fish. Perhaps that’s the safest bet here for diners. But for the owners, the optimal situation would be for Eatonville to revise its recipes and ensure greater attentiveness from the kitchen. A nice atmosphere is a good thing. But it won’t keep customers returning indefinitely.
