Having several teachers in the family means that we usually vacation during spring break. The guys headed to the Air and Space Museum, but after battling the crowds at The Museum of Natural History, the girls opted for the Botanic Gardens. What a pleasant surprise, even for plant lovers like us. There are several types of gardens to see and even a jungle with stairs climbing up to the canopy. Best of all, it was quiet and peaceful. Keep this climate-controlled gem in mind when you need to warm up.........or chill out.

I liked that the botanical gardens were organized in to exhibits, instead of other botanical gardens I've seen in the past that are kind of just a few fields of flowers and plants. As a pharmacist, the medicinal plants section was especially interesting. It was very hot so we didn't spend much time in the outside gardens. It's not especially cool in the plant exhibits inside, because obviously the climate has to be right for the plants, but it was still a nice break from the sun and much cooler than outside. Desert plants were also cool to look at, didn't realize there were so many different kinds of cacti! Definitely a nice stop in DC.

The Botanic Garden was beautiful, but too crowded for my comfort level. Would love to revisit mid week when there were fewer people. Didn't spend nearly enough time, or take enough pictures to do it justice. Even walking by on the street is amazing. If I ever return to Washington DC, this goes at the top of my list.

This was a pleasant surprise for myself and my daughters as they were not to interested in going to a gardens but enjoyed it and thought is was beautiful. It is very well maintained and easy to walk through. The flowers and plants were super nice . You don;t need a lot of time unless you are really into learning about different species of plants etc. There is an interactive area for children There were staff to answer questions. It was very peaceful and I got some great pictures.
