“Clumsy, overblown, and not worth a visit”
Reviewed August 4, 2007

What a waste of an opportunity this monument was. It was way too large, clumsily done, and totally lacking in elegance. It was the worst of the "illuminated tour" I went on, and a disappointing tribute to a great President. The only plus is that it featured a tribute to Eleanor.

“Place this one at the top of your Must See list”
Reviewed April 20, 2007

This memorial is very impressive and unique compared to the other presidential memorials in DC. It a long park-like area filled with waterfalls, statues and relaxing shady spots to stop and rest.

This is also one of the most interesting memorials because it tells a story as you go along. The architecture of the walls and waterfalls reflects the events during his four terms.

If you can , see the memorial when the Cherry Blossom trees that fill the memorial are in bloom.

I have a couple problems with this memorial. Let me first say the memorial itself is one of the most prettiest and is very well done with the waterfalls. But, my problem is who it is dedicated to. Franklin Roosevelt did get us through WWII and the Great Depression and deserves a memorial. But, this memorial is way larger and more impressive than any of the other memorials. Larger I mean takes up a lot of area, not tall. All of the other memorials are pretty impressive, but major historical figures like Lincoln, George Washington, or Thomas Jefferson, that did more major things for the country and created and changed major things should have better memorial. I am not saying the lincoln memorial, the washington monument, and the jefferson memorial aren't impressive, but they should be more than this. Also, another thing is something like this should be a memorial to a group of people, not just one person, like WWII, Vietnam, Civil War, the american revolution, etc. I believe this memorial is way out of proportion to the other memorials. It just keeps going on and on. The WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War memorials aren't close to this of magnitude.

“The most underrated monument”
Reviewed December 27, 2006

The FDR monument is specatacular. Without a doubt a beautiful design and a wonder to expirience. Expirience is an apt word as you walk through a chronology of his presidency in a way, including a nice tribute to Elanor. Some wonderful quotes and a fantastic monument.

“Much more than I expected”
Reviewed September 28, 2006

Well-done summary of FDR's presidency. I particularly liked the statue of Eleanor. The quotations carved in the walls add much. What I remember most, surprisingly, is the depiction of the hopelessness of the depression era. A memorable monument to be sure.
