“More than only a religious visit.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

You will very much enjoy learning the history of this gothic cathedral and seeing the wonderful details of its construction and decoration. Very notable to me were the children's chapel and the numerous needlepointed kneeler pillows that proliferate throughout the cathedral. It seems this is an active religious community but they welcome the whole world into their beautiful space.

“Christmas Eve 2013”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

Attended the Christmas Eve service at this beautiful Cathedral. There is construction going on but scope the church and architecture you can see is impressive. If you want to attend the Christmas Eve service, arrive very early because parking was impossible. After a long wait in line to enter the parking facility, we were turned around because it was full. We parked several blocks away, but the long delay had us finding seats in the very the rear of the Cathedral. This turned out just fine because the choir performed songs alternately from the front and rear of the church!

“Enormous site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

I have seen several of the iconic cathedrals in the world, but this one has to be one of the largest. I was surprised that it wasnt in the city center, but instead nestled on a hill outside of Georgetown nearer Embassey Row. Adorned in scaffolding (what isnt in DC?)....this grand building offers a lot for visitors to see. Per recent news though, be aware that there is now an entry fee...it was free in 2013, but now costs a few bucks.

If you ever have the chance to attend this service, don't miss it! Beautiful, moving. Passes are required and get there very early if you want a good seat.

“You'll think you are in Europe!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2013

Hard to believe that this magnificent cathedral is a) in America, and b) not hundreds of years old! It is immense, ornate and was finally finished in 1990 (after @ 80 years of construction!) It can take you hours to maneuver this architectural gem - there are docent led tours, or self-guided, both of which will be fee-based in 2014. Either way you will find yourself studying each stained glass window and learning the stories behind them (some surprisingly modern themes are represented), and marveling at the absolutely breath-taking interiors - artwork, sculptures, carvings and seemingly endless nooks and crannies with altars and private prayer stations. There is an underground crypt area as well, with additional chapels and a gift shop with some light refreshments. The outdoor area is expansive as well, and there are adjacent gardens for quiet outdoor reflection. Allow plenty of time for a visit here, and bring your camera with a long and wide angle lens to capture the best shots.
