“In love with Gothic Architecture”

This was a great old building. It is a place to go for many reasons. I personally love churches but you could go for a religious retreat, for meditation, or just to take in the breathtaking structure.

“Deeply Inspiring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

Mr. had visited this national treasure in 1971 while it was still under construction. This revisit was deeply moving, awesome and heart-touching. We have visited cathedrals in other countries but none can exceed the beauty and relevance of the cathedral. The stained glass has origins in the history of our grand USA.
There is a free tour that is worth the time to discover all the history in the place. The crypt of President Woodrow Wilson is visible on the main floor. He is the only former US President buried in the District of Columbia.
There was some external earthquake damage sustained a couple of years ago. They have hired Italian stonemasons to hand cut the replacement pieces in the steeples. This place is gorgeous, grand and shouldn't be missed if you really want to see D.C.

“Peace and Beauty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

The Cathedral embodies the best aspects of religion: it is the creativity and physical effort of many people over time seeking to portray a connection with the divine. It takes real skill to make stone look like lace and to illuminate images of human endeavor and struggle in stained glass. The beauty of this building is awesome and silences the inner turmoil to connect with oneself and the divine.

“Definitely worth the time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

If you like history, or architecture, or gardens, this place will have you pleased. They ask for a donation, but one is not required. They have docent-led tours of the main floor, and then you are free to roam through many other areas. The outside gardens at the base of the building were nice to see & smell. Overall, it was beautiful and peaceful.
