For a non local, this is one of the more difficult to get to DC National sights. But if you can find a way (I did the Metro/bus combo which took awhile and required some research), it is worth the effort.
The view from upstairs over DC was worthwhile, even in wintery evening conditions. The information lady could not have been more helpful or friendly.
There are some lovely smaller chapels downstairs, including the tiny Good Shepherd chapel which I found a wonderful place for some quiet meditation in the centre of such a busy town.
You are welcome to attend services, and so I planned my visit for an hour sightseeing in the later afternoon, and stayed on for Evensong (5.30pm) which had the boys choir leading. If you do do this, make sure you don't hang back in the 'tourist' seats, but take the invitation to join the service in the choir stalls. Beautiful time of worship.

I visited the Cathedral way before the earthquake. It was, and still is, awesome. It is large and, before the quake, had tours up the tower, where the bell ringers are, a couple times a year. It was impressive and the view outside is really something. The Cathedral is on the highest point looking over Washington DC.

If you happen to be on a tour that stops here or staying nearby (in Georgetown or Tenleytown, or anywhere along Wisconsin Avenue where the busses stop outside the Cathedral) go see it. It is in the Gothic style, with, to my mind, a hint of Notre Dame in Paris, but it was only finished in the 1990s! Wander around the outside, looking at the gargoyles and trying to spot Darth Vader and the Hippy (among others) and spending time in the lovely rose garden, before heading in to admire the stained glass. Part of the Pentagon from the 9/11 attack is here. If you have flexibility over your visit, try to time it with one of the concerts or recitals - the acoustics are wonderful.

While the cathedral is a bit further from other monuments downtown, it's really worth the hike (or getting off the tourist bus). Beautiful architecture, lots of history, and some wonderful concerts are organized here.

In my many visits to D. C. this was the first time we made it to the Cathedral and it was so worth it. Time your visit to take one of the tours and if you're lucky your guide will be Maureen. With an amazing knowledge of the cathedral, local and national history, and details about every corner of the property you will live a bit of history and enjoy a spiritual experience as well. The church contains the remains of presidents and residents, houses amazing architecture, provides dazzling displays of the stained glass windows, particularly when viewed at certain times on a sunny day, and is simply a must-see. Give yourself at least 2 -3 hours to really see the church properly and be sure to include the chapels below the church.
