Owner description: The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

We decided at the last minute to book a tour of the Capital and we were very glad we did. The new visitors center is something to see, the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and the food in the restaurant was not your usual cafeteria food. I ordered the tickets ahead on line and we walked right in and got into line..

The tour is excellent, informative and eye opening. It requires advanced tickets but some same day spots are available but a slow day for them is 1800 people and I wouldn't recommend going without tickets in advance. Also the earliest tours are the least crowded. Go as early as you can! Also I should mention the passion of the guides in sharing the history of the Capitol. It made the time fly and me wanting more!

The various military bands offer free summer concerts in the DC area. The ones at the west steps of the US Capitol are relaxing combination of the Capitol building behind you and the Capitol Mall in front. The view is particularly striking at sunset. A nice tribute is the military hymn medley to honor those in military service and those who have served. Of course, there are the major concerts with the Washington Symphony during Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

I had no idea our capitol building was so beautiful - it was really amazing. Walking up near it far surpasses any images you see on TV and online. The interior is a work of art. Our tour guide was really well-educated, fun, peppy, and excellent at what she did - she'd explain something, make a joke or observation about it, and repeat a summary of what she just said - a technique that worked really well with the large and semi-spread-out group. They are exceptionally well set-up for large crowds - after a brief video, you're channeled into different lines, where you get headsets to hear the tour guide, so they don't need to shout. The entrance is NOT what you would think of as attached to the building - it's kind of in front of the plaza at a lower level. We arrived a bit early and were able to catch an earlier tour. It would have been nice if they talked more about the slaves that built the building, although they did name the main check-in area Emancipation Hall. For me, that's kind of a band-aid. But the tour was great and the architecture was amazing. Our tour guide would make a great professor. Cafeteria at the lower level. Two gift shops, restrooms, and sufficient area to have a seat for a bit (i.e. less "official" than I expected the interior to be). There is an underground tunnel to the Library of Congress that would have been neat to see if our schedule had allowed it.

I recently took a tour of the US Capitol and it was fantastic. They handle the lines and crowds very well. The tour is informative and take you around some great places in the building. Well worth the time to see some history in the nations Capitol.
