Owner description: The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

We got tickets through our local representative for the tour of the Capitol building. Our tour guide was excellent and the capitol building just beautiful. Well worth visiting!

Great tour though an amazing land mark. Wish we could have checked out the Capitol's private transit system.

The skinny:

Parking- nothing we could see near the Capitol
Bathrooms- facilities on each floor
Food- a cafeteria where the food is subpar and there are hundreds of teens
Gift Shop- one on each level
Visitor Center- easily can spend 1.5 hours on displays
Tour- great!!!!

If you get a chance to go, book a tour through your senator or congressperson from your district because you have to show up at there offices which are housed in buildings on either side of the Capitol Bldg. From there, they take you through underground tunnels all the way to the Capitol! It is so cool, plus the staff will tell you tidbits about the tunnels and how everything works - it's different and eye-opening. Once you get to the visitor center they drop you off to join the huge crush of tourists to do the one hour tour with the docent. The docents take you around and explain all the statues, the building and how things work in general.

If you book through one of the offices they also give you Gallery passes to either the senate or the House of Representatives. You can use the passes to sit in the public galleries above the chambers and watch your peeps in action. We witnessed 3 votes with the 435 members of the House while we were there - so cool!!

This is a must if you are in DC!

We were visiting Washington, D. C. for the first time in our lives. We contacted our congressman and his staffer made a reservation for us to tour the Capital. The tour guide asked everyone where they were from. He then greeted each one in their own language. He also remembered each state the rest of us were from. When we were upstairs in the hall where every state had two statues of people of importance, the guide individually pointed out the statues from our states for us. He also asked many of the high schoolers historical questions. Unfortunately, the kids did not know many of the answers although the questions were easy. He asked to encourage the kids to learn more about US History.

the capitol building what a sight! very imposing ,but one does not realise the hill climb, the building is magnificent outside and inside ,but for someone who might be challenged with gait it could be difficult. but well worth the challenge.
