The Potomac River is beautiful in every season. There are boats on it. Ducks and geese swim near its shores. The trees lining the banks are beautiful. Runners use the paths. Parents push their babies in carriages. Bikers bike along the paths. It is a well used recreational site.

The Potomac is a treasure and there are many ways to experience it, from taking a dinner cruise from the southwest waterfront to catching a tourist boat ride from Georgetown harbor. My personal favorite was a flat water kayak outing arranged by a local outfitter. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available from the Georgetown waterfront.

It's not the cleanest water but a great place to put in a boat and go fishing for the day. Just don't eat the fish, throw them back.

Although a relatively normal size large river we never think too much about crossing with our big bridges etc, it is wide enough to comprehend why Washington crossing this river in a row boat, in the the dead of winter, on Christmas, practically frozen over, was such an understated task and accomplishment in itself. Must have been a nightmare. This was no stones throw kind of river.Yet I was surprised that there were no bridges to be drawn up for larger boats passages through it and our county's history as the Potomac was a very necessary vital waterway for goods. There are many points of interest along it's shores and would be worth a river cruise, not only to sight see off your feet, but historically a lot has gone on and there are famous buildings and homes along the route. Surprisingly interesting. Scenery is beautiful with its rocks and cliffs.

Whatever you go the view of the Potomac is wonderful. I went to bike with my family during a weekend and we made the path from Roosvelt Island to Alexandria, it is a beautiful path if you have a weekend free and enjoy biking I will recommend you to do this one.
