Pan-Asian restaurants have been trendy for years now, serving a variety of popular Japanese, Chinese and even Thai dishes, the kind of place to go to when you can't quite agree on which cuisine to go for. We went there with the incentive of a groupon promotion, and it's located conveniently on the way back from an afternoon at the museums. A storm was approaching so we decided that it would be a deal breaker if there's no place to park. But there was just one metered spot waiting for us right at the corner of 8th and H. On an early weekday evening the place was quite empty, except for a happy hour group at the bar (it started to fill up around 6). The restaurant was attractive, modern decor, comfortable seats with adequate spacing. The combination of brightly colored walls, black tables and white seat cushions gave the interior a sleek lounge/club feel. There's a front and back dining room, neither very big, also cute seating areas in between (one three-seater wedged between two walls by a window seems to be a very cozy spot). We sat by the front window facing H street, corner table where two can sit at right angles. Ordered vegetable and shrimp tempura, Tofu Royale, and a maki/nigiri set (Omasake Combo). The tempura was delicious, the batter light and crispy ($15 with 5 pieces of shrimp and about 10 pieces of vegetables), the sushi combo quite good as well, although the rice on the nigiris fell apart too easily. The tofu – kind of like a Chinese version of the Japanese age-dashi tofu - came in a thick brown sauce that's way too salty. So probably best to stick with the Japanese dishes here. Price seemed to be a bit higher than other comparable restaurants - the tofu dish was $15, which is more than tofu dishes I'd seen anywhere – even for an entree size portion. However the dining environment and atmosphere here should make up for any slight shortcomings in the food (I'd give the food a 3.5, and 4.5 for the environment).

We had a very pleasant dinner and were not disappointed by our choices. We had sushi and oysters for appetizers which were fresh and tasty. Dinner entrees were also very good with nothing to complain about. Atmosphere is nothing fancy. We were on the second floor over looking the bar area. The spiral staircase was awkward so be sure to ask for a ground floor table if you are not steady on stairs. Overall, a pleasant dining experience.

I love Asian food and this was such a surprise. I had the Thai Kapow and the the Thai spicy rice. Absolutely fabulous. Hot, fresh, generous portions and reasonable. Lovely atmosphere inside and out Definitely a lively scene but good for families too....

Ascetically, Asian Spice is very attractive from the outside. The outdoor patio is comfortable and inviting. The service was fast and attentive. The food was mediocre. My husbands eggplant dish was good, but my chicken dish was swimming in sauce (it was not a curry dish). All in all, we had a pleasant experience, but if we were to return, we'd probably just have drinks and an appetizer on the patio (bonus: it's very close to the Chinatown metro station).

I wish I could give this place a 3.5 rating. The food was average, which is not bad in any way. It just didn't stand out.

The Panang Curry was delicious, with a complex sauce that could have been a bit thicker in consistency and barely earned its one chilli pepper for spiciness. There also could have been more chicken in it (shrimp also is offered). My friend enjoyed the Kal Bi (Korean grilled short ribs). I found them a bit chewy.

The duck roll appetizer, a riff on Peking duck in an egg roll was creative and had a reasonable amount of duck, but the flavor was rather ordinary. The seaweed salad was good, but the cucumber salad was just unmarinated, undressed slices of cucumber. It had neither the ponzu sauce nor the sesame seeds promised on the menu, and $6.00 for 35 cents worth of raw cucumber was more than a bit steep.

In other words, everything was good, but something brought it down to ordinary.

The coffee was superb.

Service was gracious and accommodating. We came after the theater--it was only a couple of blocks from the Shakespeare Theatre company--and they serve their full menu until midnight on Friday and Saturday, which was one of the reasons we chose this place.

We used a discount coupon for this dinner. Had we not, it would have been expensive for the ordinary food.
