Pan-Asian restaurants have been trendy for years now, serving a variety of popular Japanese, Chinese and even Thai dishes, the kind of place to go to when you can't quite agree on which cuisine to go for. We went there with the incentive of a groupon promotion, and it's located conveniently on the way back from an afternoon at the museums. A storm was approaching so we decided that it would be a deal breaker if there's no place to park. But there was just one metered spot waiting for us right at the corner of 8th and H. On an early weekday evening the place was quite empty, except for a happy hour group at the bar (it started to fill up around 6). The restaurant was attractive, modern decor, comfortable seats with adequate spacing. The combination of brightly colored walls, black tables and white seat cushions gave the interior a sleek lounge/club feel. There's a front and back dining room, neither very big, also cute seating areas in between (one three-seater wedged between two walls by a window seems to be a very cozy spot). We sat by the front window facing H street, corner table where two can sit at right angles. Ordered vegetable and shrimp tempura, Tofu Royale, and a maki/nigiri set (Omasake Combo). The tempura was delicious, the batter light and crispy ($15 with 5 pieces of shrimp and about 10 pieces of vegetables), the sushi combo quite good as well, although the rice on the nigiris fell apart too easily. The tofu – kind of like a Chinese version of the Japanese age-dashi tofu - came in a thick brown sauce that's way too salty. So probably best to stick with the Japanese dishes here. Price seemed to be a bit higher than other comparable restaurants - the tofu dish was $15, which is more than tofu dishes I'd seen anywhere – even for an entree size portion. However the dining environment and atmosphere here should make up for any slight shortcomings in the food (I'd give the food a 3.5, and 4.5 for the environment).
