Owner description: The Smithsonian Institution has two museums of Asian art: the Freer Gallery of Art, which opened to the public in 1923, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which welcomed its first visitors in 1987. Together known as the Freer|Sackler, the museums are physically connected by an underground passageway and ideologically linked through the study, exhibition, and sheer love of Asian art. Please note: The Freer Gallery of Art will be closed to the public from January 2016 until summer 2017. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Library, and Archives will remain open for the duration of the renovation.

“An amazing collection and a terrific visit”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

The Freer and Sackler galleries have what may be the best collection of Asian art in the western world -- certainly the best I've seen and better than anything I know in New York City where I live.

It also helps that the galleries are spacious and quiet, much more welcoming than the massive Smithsonian museums nearby on the Mall. Of course those museums are crowd-pleasers and whole-family attractions -- not everyone is up for Mughal metalware and Japanese prints, just to name two of the countless treasures here! -- but the feeling of being out of the ruckus is part of the draw.

“Great Children's programs”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

I visit this gallery regularly with my children. The collections are beautiful and the art programs for children are nicely tailored to help our children learn about and appreciate specific exhibits.

Reviewed January 20, 2013

It's in the National Mall and really close to the metro station. The gallery wasn't crowded. There are collections of Asian art and work about Buddhism. And Peacock room is cool.
