I hated the Tabard for the ghoulish looking characters that were there. However my friend convinced me that all that had changed for the better.Reluctantly I went back and to my surprise I found an over all staff change from weird to professional. The dining experience was fantastic and all the servers and bartenders were in top form. My luggage was carried to my room.I could feel the new vibrancy in all the staff. An old hotel has gotten a face lift by adding young vibrant workers that are on top of there game. At this time for food ,drink or just relaxing I would recommend it to everyone with a long explanation of how and why it is so fabulous.

We had a good time with friends in a private room, started with Bloody Marys and then to the good food menu where scrabled eggs with hash browns was liked. Lovely old eating room from the 19th century (?) suitably furnished. It was Sunday and the place very busy which may have accounted for the rather slow service, but that was really the only criticism. Would love to stay here.

The Tabard Inn is an old, established hotel and restaurant. It has a lovely sunny dining area and the staff is attentive to their guests. Their Saturday and Sunday brunches are known and enjoyed by locals. It's a great location in DC: about a mile from the White House (walking) and just a few blocks from Dupont Circle. It's quaint, not modern, without TVs in the rooms, so be prepared to go back in time and enjoy the ambiance. It can be noisy in a couple of the rooms, so if you need quiet, but sure to ask about that. There's also a small, but friendly bar and in the winter there's a lounge area with a real fireplace and comfy armchairs.

Room Tip: If you need quiet to sleep, stay away from rooms near the restaurant/bar and those overlooking N Str...

Stayed here for a week in October .
We stayed in two different rooms ,the first few days two rooms sharing a bathroom the last four days the penthouse room with all five of us in there.
They were both quirky but fun,a lot of stairs up to the penthouse ,so definitely not for anyone with any fitness issues.
The breakfasts were fine, unusually for the states not too much food, but enough to start the day.
We never ate in the restaurant in the evening but it was always full and the menu although not cheap looked interesting-unfortunately far too interesting for our children who refused to try it!
The bar was good although again a bit on the pricey side.
The location was great, either a short walk to the metro or a slightly longer walk to the main attractions in central dc.
Only one issue and not the hotels fault ,but both Friday nights the street noise was loud until about 2am,students I think.probably only affects rooms overlooking the main street.

Room Tip: Lower floor rooms if you struggle with stairs as no lift.

I'm writing this from palatial room #33: fireplace, 2 couches, 2 beds and a fainting/Freud couch, and aview of the brownstones across N street. Size of a large Victorian front parlor. Disadvantages: some street noise at nighr and bathroom shared with one other room, not nearly the problem I imagined it might be. We switched here from #9 which was dark, tiny, poky but quiet and had ensuite bath. If we'd remained there I'd not be recommending the Tabard. Staff here are outstandingly kind and helpful. If you want to be in a humane walkable neighborhood (Dupont Circle) with lots of highbrow tourism (Phlllips Collection)and can live with no TV, no bellhop, and poor sound insulation, this might be your place, The restaurant is good but expensive: try Cafe Luna around the corner on Connecticut or Teaism. Heat in our room was quiet & efficient. Other good rooms : #35, (big, ensuite bath) #41, #44. But call staff and check --they all have pluses and minuses. We felt at home in every corner of the Tabard and spent the bulk of one "down day" right in our room. It was grand enough to entertain guests, almost like a suite.

Room Tip: Front rooms have great light but some street noise, The shared bath rooms are amazing value and some...

For longtime Inners, my experience is that it's the same. Same food, same room, same attitude at checkin, same great location. No drama and no big changes. Comforting for those of us who have been going for years and years. Maybe not what some were expecting.

We stayed at this hotel, when we were for on a short trip to Washington D.C. The place is lovely, and has a great décor and vibe to it. The building was just stunning. There are no elevators in the hotel and getting a room on lower floors seems practical. Nevertheless our room was spacious and comfortable. Our stay was very enjoyable at this hotel and we would certainly recommend it.
