“Monuments Highlights a great and fun 90 minute alternative view of DC”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

I took my parents on the 90 minute momuments highlights tour, which was great value, and we had a really fun time. Our group was 9 people. The training at the beginning was fine, and when we set off we felt confident. A little less so when we found ourselves (a) on busy roads full of cars, and (b) on extremely busy pedestrian paths on the Mall (beware of going on days which have special festivals, as was the case with us and the Kite Blossom Festival - so busy it was hard and a bit scary to move around!). When we weren't dodging cars and people, it was great fun though. Loved zooming along by the water. The tour stopped once, for 8 minutes, between the FDR and MLK memorials - enough time to quickly visit one of them on foot. My parents took that time to sit down though! So in summary, not much time to look at the actual memorials, but a fun, quirky way to see some of Washington's slightly out-of-the-way sights and views efficiently.

Worth noting that my father found it hard to go as fast as the rest of us, and to go uphill - he was always at the back of the group, and ended up having to step/fall off the segway 4 times when crossing roads. Unclear whether it was his weight (230 lbs, which is apparently within the recommended limits) or his segway being faulty, but he had a less fun time and ended up with bashed ankles and anxiety from having to step/fall off so often (and then struggle to get back on and to catch up with the group). My concern was that the tour leader was positioned at the front, and when my dad was struggling at the back, there was no way to attract the leader's attention for help til he turned round of his own accord to make sure we were all still there. It would be safer to have a sweeper at the back, or some kind of bell/contact method. My mother, on the other hand, who is usually very anxious, was soon zooming along with confidence.

Another thing to note was that the leader spoke to us through an earpiece, which stopped working altogether two thirds of the way through the trip (not just mine - everyone's).

But generally, this was a lot of fun and I'd recommend it. I'd recommend this particular tour for tourists who've seen most of the main sights, as the route gives a slightly different experience than the usual Mall/Smithsonian/White House/Capitol sights if you've already seen them. Much as we enjoyed it, 90 minutes was absolutely enough time for us, and the price was good too!

The service was beyond excellent. Our tour guide, Doug, was so knowledgeable. He was also funny, friendly, professional, and willing to make our experience the best. If you are planning a Segway tour, this one is the best.
