This was a real pleasant visit and nice surprise. I found it really interesting to see all the faces of the main historical figures who have shaped this country. The founding fathers, all the president are here and they will speak to you through their portraits. nice.

This is the place where you will see all the portraits from your high school history books. We only had about an hour before closing, so we didn't get to see the entire space. LOVED the presidential portrait gallery and truly enjoyed American impressionist galleries. If your husband or family will only tolerate one art museum, I would make it the National Gallery West building. BUT if you have time this is definitely worth a visit. Also- this building is located in Chinatown, so it is in a different area of the city (not on the National Mall).

This museum is nice if you have time but given the choice between the two, I would recommend the National Gallery of Art much more highly.

Portrait Gallery is a wonderful walk thru history from the era when there were no cameras -- people (who could afford it) had their portraits painted the way today we take family photos, and an amazing number of them are on display here. Well worth reading the name plates and backgrounds.

It is both an art museum and and history museum. Don't miss it if you lover either art or history! You can walk to it from the National Mall.
