My favorite part of the gallery was the presidential portraits, mostly because each had a summary of that presidency. I cam away with more knowledge of American history.
There are other exhibits that could keep you busy all day. There was a handwriting exhibit showcasing letters written by famous people and handwriting analysis. An MLK exhibit is also worth spending time in.
The gallery opens later than most other things in the area, so maybe plan a short activity before your trip to the gallery.

This attraction is very well laid out. There are lockers for your use (you choose a four digit code), which is a nice touch to be able to enjoy the gallery without backpacks, hats, etc.

Be advised, however, that this attraction does not open until 11:30 a.m.

“From paintings to sculptures.”

The Portrait Gallery is connected to the Art Gallery. It has portraits of the famous to those who you meet for the first time through their portrait. Not a lot of seating so don't head for this place if you've been already touring.

“Most Worthwhile”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

I always try to stop here when I can, as it's a few blocks from the Mall and offers a nice respite from the crowds. Here you will find classic, familiar portraits of the seminal figures in American history, dating from the 1600s to the present. You will see the originals of pictures you have often seen reproduced of our founding fathers and a complete set of portraits of the Presidents. In addition to the permanent collections, they have regular exhibits, most recently featuring photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The building itself is a treasure. It is the Old Patent Office, built in 1840 and a National Landmark. The Gallery shares space with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. There is a covered courtyard where you can get a snack and a drink and, at times, listen to music. The best part is the admission price: FREE.

“Double museum of American art and portraits of Americans!”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

Loved this almost secret Smithsonian museum with American art and portraits of famous Americans. The museum was virtually empty on a weekday afternoon so it was quiet and you didn't have to deal with annoying kids or people. There are two main wings separating the two galleries but the place is a huge maze and you end up in another area the further you explore. Love the presidential portraits so you can see what they really looked like. Put this on your must see list if art and people interest you!
