One of the highlights of my trip to DC. Beautiful artwork and sculpture. Endless rooms of beauty. I even got lost and could not be happier! The Presidential portrait gallery was the highlight. I will be back!!

I have loved and revisited this museum. The art is like reading personal interest stories. Excellent, beautiful central area to rest and regroup; when I was there on a rainy day, they had shallow "ponds" on the floor children were skipping through - beautiful! Excellent location to go to Rosa Mexicana for guac. and Spy Museum and Shakespeare Theatre.

This stunning museum along with its partner- the American Art Museum- is well worth a visit. Just wandering through the elegant rooms is a pure pleasure. Not to mention the always fabulous permanent collection and the often interesting temporary exhibits. There is a lovely cafe space between the 2 museums. But beware the outrageous prices at the cafe - instead, bring your own lunch.

We sort of stumbled onto this, because we wanted a lobster sandwich (Lobster Lou's!), and they stayed open late that evening. The presidential portrait section was really good, spent a lot of time in there, didn't even see the whole museum. Then, only discovered the room sized paintings of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone on the way out when they closed! I visited there last summer and saw the story at the site. I had no idea the originals were in that museum. Also, there were not the galloping herds of juveniles that roam the National Mall museums, so that added to the enjoyment. Try not to miss this, but please don't go with your junior high history class bus... :)!

I know this sounds stuffy and boring but there is much more to this museum than just portraits of George Washington. they have a beautiful courtyard in the middle, great special exhibits including one on Amelia erhardt that was interesting, several great photos old and new and much more. check it out.
