so many familiar faces, and lots of new ones too! it inspires you to go back and re-read - or learn anew - American history. Beautifully displayed. The building itself is also an impressive relic of another time, when spending resources on public goods was still considered a good thing.

I feared we were making the obligatory visit to a bunch of stuffy portraits of people we never heard of, but the museum was so much more that we couldn't see it all in one trip. My husband was very taken with an enormous Bierstadt and we appreciated the narrative paintings that told a story about America's history, room by room. This is a huge gallery and well worth spending a day there.

Go -- just go. Contemporary collections, always something new to see. This is a great gallery. Love the portraits.

My favorite museum in Washington. And I generally don't like art museums. But this one is special. The notes on the paintings address not only the artist and the artwork, but also the life of the person portrayed -- so the art is all put in historic and social context. So you actually learn about the revolution, the civil war, the gilded age and so forth in terms of people who lived through it. The Art of Video Games exhibit was on when we were there. Well put together. President's Gallery is a must see. And they have an exhibit of patent models from when it was the patent office. The building itself is just beautiful - especially the courtyard. Friendly and helpful staff.

Enjoyed the portraits of the early presidents the most. The galleries are grand. Many floors, much to see. There are other exhibits besides portraits. Many sculptures. Some landscapes of beautiful American locations from yesteryear. Chinatown restaurants are nearly across the street. We ate at Gordon Biersch across the street, and it was good.
