Took my 11-year old daughter who loved putting faces together with her history lessons. The works are displayed in logical and historical groupings that allow a contextual view of many people who built the nation. My daughter loved the native American portraits as well as the presidential gallery. We only wish there was more time!

LOVE how all the Smithsonian Museums are free but betcha didn't know that you can save 10% on food at the Smithsonian and 20% on shopping in their gift stores IF YOU BECOME A MEMBER. Plus if you buy the little $2.00 booklet (less your 20%) by the cash register in every shop detailing all the Smithsonian museum current exhibits, there's discount coupons inside for shopping online, IMAX theatre, simulator rides and more! Plus you get a subscription to the Smithsonian magazine for a year for free and every Christmas they give you 2 free subscriptions to share -- we send one to a cash-strapped teacher (and what teacher isn't?) and the other to our grandchildren. Sounds like an ad for the Smithsonian but we saved tons of money when we visited as a member!

I would strongly suggest getting a tour with a docent - the portraits are much more interesting when you know a little bit about the subjects.
