Walking around the National Mall is a great way to see all the museums and a perfect place to people watch
What a view on Washington national mall. So much history about the mall and the monument. I recommend staying in Washington at least 7 days. It's worth your visit to see the museum's, attractions, etc.
The grounds are very well kept. It was a nice area and full of monuments and museums to enjoy and learn of the Nation's history.
We visited in early summer and rode the metro in to the National Mall area from Alexandria, VA. We got off at the National Air and Space stop and walked all around the mall area. The museums and monuments are within walking distance (for the most part). Our family of 5 walked 8-10 miles in one day, going between the different museums. There are several shady spots to sit and rest and have a snack. There are food trucks and vendors all around to purchase food and souvenirs should you want to. We saw lots of people biking around the city and bringing their bikes onto the metro, so we might actually bring our bikes next time we visit the area. Felt safe while walking around, even at night.
Loved walking the National Mall. From the US Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Quite an impressive site for those of you who have not so before. The weather was beautiful and NOT hot during September.
