The plan was developed in 1791 by Major Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant. He appropriately placed the Congressional building on Capitol Hill, not the White House, to show the paramount importance of a democratic republic rather than an executive-run government.

Still beautiful, although the reflecting ponds are full of ducks and not as clean as they could be.

So much to see and do in DC. Great walk to the Capital through the National Mall. It does look very far or long but I am thinking a good 3/4 mile from end to end.

On any given day, stand at one end the Capitol, and be impressed by the distance past the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. Or stand at the Lincoln Memorial, and see the Washington Monument reflected in the Reflecting pool with the Capitol forming the background. Be sure to see this direction both in the day and at night. Very impressive indeed.

The National Mall is a collection of museums and memorials in a single row in the beautifully landscaped capital of the country. Beware of the long walks though - we were very tired at the end of the day, walking along the stretch and taking detours.

The National Mall creates easy walking to all of the museums and most of the sites in DC. It is well laid out, is NOT a shopping mall and it is where groups congregate.

I had no idea when I saw this as a site on the map that it was where all the protests, events, and celebrations are especially after some guy tried to tell me it was a big mall with stores. I wasn’t going to go because of that but luckily saw it in passing. NOT A SHOPPING MALL obviously. Nice view, not too many people today

One of the most royally beautiful place of the USA. Very organized. Aristocratic Lincoln Memorial on one end and The mighty Washington Monument on the other, in between the amazing reflecting pool, also the United States Capitol a mikes away from the Washington Monument. Its a wonderful place to spend hours with any dear person. You could start from the Lincoln Memorial and walk up to the State Capitol. Quite a walk though. The sky can be very clever and artistic and find in the photo what did me and ma confidante saw.

This is a unique place. I walked from the Lincoln memorial to the food trucks beyond the Washington monument. I noticed several things: 1: I'm overweight. 2: this is a very popular spot with, well, everyone. I heard languages from all over as I walked the mall. 3: this is a very popular place for runners. So, if you come here, wear comfortable walking shoes.

Memorials, museums, great views, lawns - what more can one want? Well, food is not the best, but one can make do.

Is amazing to walk around and visit all the monuments and museums. Wish I had more time to explore more.
