Okay, here are a few pointers and tips on how to handle your day(s) here at the National Mall.

1: Unless you are walking distance from the Mall I recommend you dont take your car and attempt to park there, take the metro it is a lot faster and easier to get to and from your hotel.
The first day to the Mall we took our car and i'm not even lying, it took us an hour to find an empty parking spot.
So the second day we got a metro pass and it was MUCH easier, it pops you out right in the middle of the mall. PERFECT!

2: Depending on the age of your kids it's good to take small little breaks in between your walking. There is a lot of walking to do there.

3: You need at least 4 days there if you really want to see everything around the area. Take your time and take it all in.

4: Another good tip is to get the hop on and hop off busses, they give a great tour and drop off at great stops. It's also a good rest from all the walking.

Overall it's a great time!! Highly higly recommend it!

This is one of the greatest pieces of real estate in the US that flanks a lot of monuments and is freely accessible to the people. A variety of activities are always going on around you with everything from people flying kites to playing frisbee and even cricket and soccer. I have taken my kids many times, and if you pack your lunch, you can eat it on the grass or go into the many sculpture gardens of the Smithsonian. I strongly recommend giving yourself two to three hours to enjoy the National Mall.

so many attractions of washington is all in a walk path way. we initially had brunch and parked our car at a Garage and started covering all the attractions by walk. Road maps and bill boards are really very informative and was in aid. Nice place for those who like Monuments and Museums. One day for washington is way more than enuf..

Loved that you could walk alot of the attractions in one area called the Nat'l Mall...there are pocket parks to rest and vendors along the way and beautiful flowers and trees...and old architecture that is so beautiful...I was in awe and very impressed

Museums and history galore, the National Mall is full of relics from the past. There are so many sights to see, you can easily spend about a week visiting each and every museum and monument (which you really should, especially the Smithsonian family of museums). Look over maps, take your time, and really enjoy and reflect on the monuments and history of the United States.

If you can, try to visit in early spring, when the cherry blossoms are blooming around the Jefferson Memorial. And bring good walking shoes and plenty of water, there's a lot of walking around from place to place! Take the Metro to get into DC from outer places, as I've read that parking/driving is rather unpleasant.
