If you go to D.C., you of course should consider walking the National Mall. In fact, you will likely end up there whether you make it a specific point or not, considering that most of the major sites in D.C. lie near or along it. We walked from the capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, then on to the Jefferson Memorial, and that was about a half-day trip in all if you take it easy. It probably could be walked in less time if you rushed through, though.

We recently visited D.C.. It was my first time. I was amazed by this area. It was so beautiful, even on a rainy day. There is so much to see and do around it! It takes 3-4 days to soak it all in properly. Unfortunately, we only had one day. But it was one day very well spent! Just beautiful - a must visit to add to your travel map. Snag some lunch from a street vendor, sit on one of many benches or lounge in the grass and take it all in.

The National Mall is amazing!! All the historical sites are there from the Lincoln Monument to the impressingly tall Washington Monument. So much history here and the Smithsonian Museums are in the heart of it all. Please wear comfortable walking shoes since it's larger than it seems on the map. While planning your visit avoid holiday weekends since the crowds are large and you will have to wait in long lines to enter into the museums. Take your time to enjoy it all. Note of caution: the Washington Monument is currently closed until 2014 for repairs.

What can you say. The real reason to visit DC. The monumemts and memorials are great. wWe were luck as when we visited the Cherry Blossoms had just fully bloomed. Beautiful site. Great to walk around but be prepared for a lot of walking.

The National Mall has witnessed the making of more American History through the exercise of civil rights than perhaps any other public space in the USA. For that reason alone, it’s well worth seeing. The Metro’s Smithsonian station, located almost at its midpoint, makes it easy. Flanked by the US Capitol at one end, and the Washington Monument at the other, the Mall has nearby surface and underground parking. Walking paths trace its perimeter. Bicycles are available for rent. The National Gallery of Art, the Air and Space Museum, and other attractions are nearby. Bring a camera for what you’ll discover at these attractions, as well as for the Mall itself. On weekend days, expect crowds, even in the off-season! If you're hungry, varied places to eat are located both indoors in the museums and on the streets. Near dusk in the fall the Mall can be a beautiful place. Although it is generally safe by day — and a wonderful place for families to visit — be sure to remain alert and cautious at all times, and be particularly so after sunset.
