Everyone who visits DC ends up here. But sometimes the appreciation of this much open space in a major city is lacking. Go and revel in it.

There isn't enough time to see everything along the National Mall. It is deceiving... it looks easy to walk between monuments but the distances can be long. Wear comfortable shoes... bring water and snacks because food and drinks at the refreshment stands are very expensive. Parking is very expensive... we paid $22 for a couple of hours (same price for 1 hour or all day). There is a great website to scout out parking ahead of time: http://washingtondc.bestparking.com/. We had a large group so paying for parking was still cheaper than all taking the Metro. All of the museums are free. The free maps of the museums aren't real specific so it would be wise to research what you want to see at each museum ahead of time to make the most of your time at each place.

There is construction going on right now which pretty much ruins any pictures you want to take. Still, there are few places that have so many free attractions in one area!

The National Mall area is a must see as it is surrounded by wonderful, free museums and monuments but the mall itself is undergoing a lot of repairs that limits access, views, photographic opportunities and the ability to experience its grandeur. During our visit, the reflecting pool was drained for repairs but has since been refilled and the grassy areas to the east near the Smithsonian Museums was torn-up and fenced off and work on these grassy areas is expected to continue till fall of 2016.

On very first day of our trip , first spot we choose for national mall. In heart of downtown this is historical sites are really inspiring. Nearest Metro station is Smithsonian. Monuments are huge so you can easily see those and seems walkable. All those monuments are walkable it take really long time to cover those. so I would strongly suggest to go for trolly buses or use Metro Rail/Bus wherever possible and avoid walking. Also there are free tours (given by rangers) at every monument.(generally goes for 15-20 min). rather than spending time in walking spend time in getting this information. On the side note, carry food / water because there are very less places for Refreshments.

Improved by the updates. Be nice to the Mall when you visit. The expanse of this national park impresses at first glance. Take the time for a slow walk end to end and enjoy the sights and the people.
