Owner description: Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the Hirshorn Museum features an exciting collection of 20th-century art and its companion scultpture garden is not to be missed.

The level with words written on the wall and floor was disorganized ( for lack of a better term) and the rest of the displays did not appeal to me. Save your time and go somewhere else.

The Hirshhorn's exhibitions are usually excellent, but the current one featuring Ai Weiwei's work is exquisite. Experiencing his installations, learning about this artist's humanity was already worth the trip to DC!!

Both the permanent collection and the special exhibits always well mounted. In nice weather the sculpture garden is a nice way to spend an hour outside.

Have loved this museum for years and always visit when in DC, and this visit was particularly inspiring - the Air Wei Wei exhibit is fascinating, moving, challenging - in general, not to be missed.

The Hirshhorn is part of the Smithsonian Museum so the best part is that it's free! The exhibits change frequently, so go to the website so see what's showing now. The museum is heavy on sculptures and the Sculpture Garden has sculptures by famous artists. Right now, there's a very good Ai Wei Wei exhibit that spans 2 floors of the circular museum. I recommend seeing it before it leaves the Hirshhorn in January. The basement level also shows films and there's a pretty good Spanish film right now called "Ser y Durar" by Democracia which shows men in red hoodies free running (parkour) through a Madrid cemetary. Also of note is what I call "the Giant Naked Man". He is so lifelike, it's eerie. Also on the basement level are famous quotations painted on the walls, floor and ceiling in giant letters. This is an art piece though, so the prohibition against flash photography applies to this as well, even though it's just paint on the walls and ceilings.
