Seeing the relics of history housed here (Smithsonian's casket, the piece of Plymouth Rock, the chunk of Joan of Arc's cell, and on and on and on) was great. It's not a long visit, but the security was my highlight. The guard thought something smelled good as he was checking my bag. Turned out to be my sweater. We had a really great, really extended hug. I wanted to trade him for his security jacket, but no dice.

The "Castle" is a great piece of architecture. And there is an excellent cafe and gift shop inside the place. The people manning the information desk do an outstanding job, and are very helpful. there is also a crypt inside the building!
I would make this my first stop on the Mall daily. every visitor to DC should see it.

If you can, start your DC trip here. There is a great map of the mall and the staff is helpful with directions and some information about DC. There is a nice little cafe in the castle with great coffee and good sandwiches. There is a great short movie to watch about the building and history of the mall. This isn't a 'must do' but you'll be glad you did.

We brought our 4 kids and 2 others. Very comfortable place to take family and begin the tour of DC. Tip, buy hotdogs from Street Vendor instead of inside the Smithsonian. Way more affordable and less wait.

All of the Smithsonian museums are fantastic and FREE! My favorite is the Museum of American History where you can see the first ladies gowns and the Natural History Museum where you can see the Hope Diamond.
