Visiting the Washington Monument was great. The area around it was very nice. That day was a ton of walking, but so worth it. The best thing about our visit to DC was that everything was free.
Great place to take a family on vacation.

It's easy and necessary to book this free attraction online and in advance. You pay only for shipping. School groups will surely join you on your ascent (even in the evening) on the tallest stand alone stone structure in the world (taller slightly than the pyramids)... but the park rangers do a good job trying to keep the kids away from the others as they know how annoying they can be - but at some point it will be inevitable that you will cross paths in the small space upstairs in the obelisk.

Just reopened in April of 2014 so it's very popular.

Get there about 5 minutes before your tour time. Go through security and then you take the elevator up and be prepared for some great views of DC. It's a tight space which is why they don't allow a lot of people in there at one time (maybe 30-40 people max per tour time which is every half hour).

I was amazed at how people wouldn't linger. They would go up to a window, take a picture with their camera, move on, and they were done! Take time and admire the architecture. Look up and look for the damage from the earthquake a few years ago, see the repairs.

Take time to read through the small exhibits and take the elevator back down and you are done!

I think the evening (after 7pm) is the best time to go as the sun is setting. You get the smallest glare from the sun and everything is still lit up nicely for photos, especially the capital building.

So much history and enjoyed the elevator ride; viewing the different bricks donated from the different states on the ride down.

I had gotten tickets ahead of time and they have the lines very organized according to time on the ticket. They let in 8-10 people at a time. Once you are up in the Monument there is no time limit, but I would say 15 minutes is all you need. Great views from all sides! Very glad I did this!

We booked this tour through the website. We paid $3 for each ticket. They send you the tickets by mail which is a waste of resources. It would be smarter to get it by email.
Our tour was scheduled for 6.30 but it was running late. The previous tours where still there waiting.
On our way up the ranger didn't give us much info about it. The observatory was crowded. And I didn't enjoy it much. It was a bit stressful. Although it has good views.
