When we went to Washington the first memorial we wanted to see was the Washington Memrial. Unfortunately it was encased in metal scaffolding for repairs and we could not go inside. However, just standing in the presence of this beautiful, understated, marble monolith surrounded by 50 American flags was awe inspiring. Seeing it at night with the flags illuminated and the two red lights at top, looking like two red eyes overlooking the Natioanl Mall made it so spectacular. I can't wait to go back and see all the blocks of all the States with their inscription inside The Monument. An absolute must see on The National Mall. You can't help but see it wherever you are near The National Mall. Expect goosebumps and a very patriotic feeling!

After having seen the White Houses take the opportunity to walk around the Washington Monument, you'll probably be tired of walking you have enough bench where you can rest and take landscape photos around the monument and the view of the White House is cool.

Took my mom to the monument. She had never seen it in person. Lots of people out and about. The weather was great which adds to the experience. Lots of walking so be prepared!

I knew it was closed but expected I could get closer with the kids. The fence keeping you out is close to 100 yards. Given there is not another big draw by it, is recommended getting the photo opp from the WWII attraction.

Moreover they did a nice job with an overlay on the scaffolding you can appreciate from a distance. It looks like brick and mortar which softens the work being done.

It is covered by a birdcage of scaffolding. They plan to open it again mid 2014. You cannot even get close to it. You will find that there is fencing all around it and you have to make a wide detour to get to the WWII memorial.
