From a distance, the design of this memorial looks to me like a large scar on the face of the earth. While opinions on the war may vary, I feel the design is fitting as a metaphor for the impact of the war on our young people and our nation. Close up, being able to see the -- so very many -- individual names of soldiers who died in this war is enough to bring tears to the eyes of even the most stoic. Still more moving are the individually placed flowers notes or other small memorabilia left by those who personally knew and loved individual soldiers we lost. This is a very solemn and moving memorial.
