“The Library for the People of Our Nation”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

We have been to D.C. many times, but only just visited the Library of Congress. I'm so glad that we did. In architectural beauty and interior decoration, it rivals the bishops' palaces of Europe. However, the themes of the murals and statues are much better: democracy and education-focussed. Take a one-hour guided tour. The tour and the admission are free. D.C. has many treasures and the Library of Congress is one of the best. The Library is easy to find, just southeast from the U.S. Capitol.

“A must see for everybody!”

I was not expecting anything that grand! Make sure you spend enough time to explore the whole place and all its nooks. The library room can only be seen from above but it's really awesome!

“I thought this place had books, no?”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

The building, both its interior and exterior, is beautiful. Bring your cameras! They have some exhibits you can walk through but to be completely honest, they are simply not that interesting.

Now, I've done almost everything there is to do in DC, both on the beaten path and off the beaten path. And this ranks pretty low. If I were advising you on what attractions to see and what to skip, this would be a definite skip, unless you're really, really into architecture. Notice I didn't say books/libraries? That's because you, as a tourist, will get to see very LITTLE books and get no library information from the docent-led guides. It's all about the architecture.

We didn't take a guided tour -- we arrived at the wrong time, so I'm writing this from a self-guided tour perspective.

Basically, what we did is go through the security check (the guards were very friendly) and wandered into the Great Hall and took a bunch of photos. Went upstairs and popped into the exhibits, one of which was a Civil War exhibit, and there was another one that was a Jewish religion exhibit. I have to say, we didn't find these very interesting.

We glanced over the reading room -- note that if you're a tourist (and if you're reading this you probably are) you won't be getting down to this room -- you need to apply and take a class, and then, and only then can you go down there.

We were in and out within about a half hour.

Bottom line, if you're in the area (maybe for your Capitol tour), it's worth a peek to look at beautiful interior, but otherwise, skip it. You can't get down into the reading room -- you get to peak at it through some plexiglass and move along.

Went around Christmas and was stunned by the beautiful displays that were set up at the LOC. The history that is contained within these walls is completely breathtaking. If you are short of time, this may not be a high priority, but if you have a few hours free, definitely take in this beautiful collection and building.
