Owner description: Though the Library of Congress doesn't own every book ever published, it sure has most of them, with 532 miles of shelves and 115 million items, with 7,000 added each working day.

The LoC is a great old building, one of many building available to visit in their system. The LoC is a short walk from the Capitol using the new underground pedestrian tunnel, which makes aacess easy if you are coming from that direction. The exhibits are usually very nice and the architecture is amazing. The part a lot of people overlook is heading up to the top of the rotunda and looking down into the stacks themselves. You cannot just walk up and ask to look around the collection, you have to apply, take a short class and then you can get onto the main floor. The whole experience to tour the LoC is not a long one, but it is worth it.

Even if you're not into old books, at least go in the spectacular foyer of this building. The majestic marble pillars and grand décor are worth the trip alone. Like other attractions in DC, it's free!

This is one of the most moving memorials in the city. However, because it is built on a small scale, it is often overlooked.

We visited the LoC after finishing a tour of the Capitol via the convenient tunnel. It is a fascinating place, we only spent an hour or so there, but if you like to stop and browse and really take an in depth look at exhibits you could easily spend a half day or more here. The building itself is breathtaking inside and the exhibits we looked at; Jefferson collection, words like sapphires (I think!) and the South American artefacts were awe inspiring. If I visit DC again the LoC will be at the top of my list to see again.

The rotunda is just beautiful and the exhibits are very interesting. Take the tunnel over to the Capitol and take a tour there too.
