“Unending Neck Snapping Views”

Luckily i didn't have to drive the winding highway and enjoyed gazing at one spectacular view after another. I'm sure we would have enjoyed are just as many new sights if we had turned around and drove in the opposite direction.

“Don't miss this”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We spent four days in the Black Hills. When I ask my three kids what their favorite part of the trip was they all said "the needles highway!" and I agree. The scenery and experience is like no other.

“Views around every corner!”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

Just got back from a road trip out west. We decided to do a side-trip to the Black Hills area since we had never been there before and also drive up the Needles Highway. What a beautiful drive! Luckily, we were there during the off-season (kids back in school) since the tunnels through the rock formations are single-lane only. I felt sorry for my husband, the driver, since he had to concentrate on the driving and didn't get to see as much scenery as I did but there were plenty of pull-outs for him to get out and admire the view and take a break from having to concentrate on the twisty-turny road. I imagine that this drive must be incredibly beautiful in the fall. I'm sure we'll be going back to this area since there appears to be so much to see and do. If you're in the Black Hills, SD area, be sure to do this short drive - you'll not regret it!

“Stunning, absolutely stunning!”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

We were made aware of this drive through reviews on Trip and we couldn't wait to see if they were justified and they were BIG TIME! We went to see Crazy Horse memorial first and drove the Needles highway and then the Iron Mountain road and our eyes were aching with the stunning scenery. We lost count of the times we had to stop to take in the scenes so if you are short on time don't do it as you wouldn't do it justice, take your time, take in the views, stay a while at Sylvan lake and just take in the magnificence of it all. AMAZING

“Big animals, big rocks, little animals, little rocks!”

Wake up early, go to Mt Rushmore. When you leave Mt Rushmore, go towards the crazy horse monument exit, (stop for the turnout to see the profile of George Washington- very cool), turn left on the next main road, then a quick left again onto "Needles Highway" (an absolute must do)- I will leave this part as a surprise but say RV's probably won't fit. Amazing sites to see. This road is part of Custer state park and if you continue down, it will lead you to the main park. We did this the SECOND time we went to Custer state park, but this seems the most efficient.

The FIRST time,
we drove down from keystone. Immediately upon entering the park ($15 for a week), we saw a huge group of antelope- Right near us. We had to stop the car to let them cross the road in front of us. Neat! We drove down and took the "left road"- on the left, lol. OMG!! A herd of bison!!! Everywhere!!! Just outside our car! Amazing, scary, cool! We left that area, then repeat!!! Another herd of bison! Take the inner loop near the wildlife area station to see PRAIRIE DOGS!!! They are so cute!
