Most of the drive is not much but the 3 miles of the west end was awesome. So many amazing sights and you could get out and hike around. Each corner produced another great sight.

We simply loved this drive - so many beautiful rock formations and scenery. The real treat is stopping at the Needle's Eye - the view is wonderful and the kids could stretch their weary travel legs by playing and climbing on rocks, rocks and more rocks! Great views - a must see for sure. DON'T FORGET to keep following the road to Sylvan Lake - we had a wonderful picnic there and...again...more rocks to climb on with a gorgeous lake complimenting the view - there is one big rock formation in the water that looks like a turtle from the beach area. The kids were watching National Treasure II (DVD) on the way home and, sure enough, part of the movie was filmed there - pretty cool!

Needles highway is a must see if you ever go to South Dakota ! The rock formations are amazing.
The road is all hair pin turns so you need to drive slow. The tunnels you go threw are Great !
One tunnel you can see Mt Rushmore threw. It takes you threw custer state park and ends at Legion Lake and what a beautiful site.Don't miss this wonderful drive if you should ever visit the Black Hills.

The Needles Highway is one of the most scenic drives in the country. It can be daunting with its hairpin curves and narrow one-lane tunnels, but you will be rewarded with awesome views of the needles rock formations. Stop at the most popular one, the Needles Eye, and take a few pics before entering one of the tunnels. The rest of the drive winds through pine valleys and mountains, and will take you into the heart of Custer State Park and ends at the Legion Lake area. Don't miss this spectacular drive when you visit the Black Hills.

The only thing I could have asked for was more places to view and take pictures of these amazing rock formations. I loved seeing the scenery all along this drive. It is interesting that someone originally considered this for the presidential monument, until Borglum said it was not suitable and chose Mt. Rushmore for his carving instead.
This place needs no enhancement, it is just wonderful.
