We like travelling from Ontario to the US Atlantic shore early September when swimming season home is over, but still on further South.
Island Beach State Park in New Jersey is beautiful place to go for a day - sitting on the beach, swimming, fishing - everything is great. The beach has parking lot and amenities - showers, changing rooms, toilets.
There is a seafood restaurant take out just outside the park.

No boardwalk, no noise (save the seagulls, waves & children's laughter), no urban clutter. This park has been my favorite NJ beach since childhood. It is a 12-mile stretch of mostly wilderness & bird sanctuary. There are 2 public beach areas, complete with dressing rooms, concessions, lifeguards & first-aid stations. But the majority of this narrow end of Pelican Island consists of sand dunes covered in lush vegetation, with beautiful big beaches that are not visible from the roadway. There are many parking areas along the road, with access paths to large, uncrowded, clean, family beaches. There are no lifeguards after Labor Day, so swimming is not permitted (or not recommended & at your own risk). If you haven't packed a lunch, Seaside Park & Seaside Heights' boardwalk are only a 15 minute drive away. If you crave a quiet & relaxed beach day, this should be your Jersey Shore target.

Kids wanted to see the ocean during our east coast trip. I found this park, and am I glad I did. So much more than just a beach. Once the park is full, they close it. So we arrived at 8:00 a.m. when they open. We drove past the swimming beaches which didn't open until 10:00, and found an ocean access path. We walked to the ocean and found an empty, peaceful beach. It was beautiful. After walking a while, we drove a little further to the Interpretive Center and Nature Center. The employee at the nature center was wonderful. We were the only people there, and he talked to us for about 45 minutes about the park and its wildlife, trails and programs. The nature center had native fish and small reptiles on display along with stuffed birds and animal bones. He recommended a walk along the ocean beach at the end of the park road. Again, what a beautiful, breathtaking, EMPTY beach. We collected shells, watched mole crabs bury into the sand, saw dolphins swimming and just enjoyed the ocean view. Then it was off to the swimming beach which was your typical crowded beach. We enjoyed the ocean swimming, but am so glad we took in the rest of this scenic park.

I grew up on Long Island with all the beautiful beaches and I will say Island Beach was just as wonderful as any of those on Long Island. The beach was clean, bathrooms were clean, and it was a beautiful day. Parking was convenient, clean and close to the beach. Also considering it was an extended holiday weekend, they only charged the daily rate for parking! My kids had a wonderful time and so did I! I'll be back next year!

Went to beach, very clean, family beach. However the day we went the greanhead flies were every where. We did get to see dolphins swimming close to the beach twice while we were there. You may also fish at marked areas of the beach and if you buy permit you may drive on the beach as well. Very nice place and lots of things to do and see for fun and learning.
