“Lake mead / Hoover dam”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

We booked a trip through viator to lake mead that included a basic lunch and a trip to Hoover dam , all in all in was a nice break and value for money with plenty of photograph opportunities below and above the dam and from the paddle boat on lake mead itself . For water sport enthusiasts it looks an ideal setting to hire boats or water motor bikes with a vast area to open up safely.

We rented a 21' open bow speed boat from Hemenway Harbor (Lake Mead Boat Harbor / Lake Mead Marina) 702-293-1191. We rented it for an entire day, it was $480 for the day plus a $400 deposit which was refunded (less gas) upon our return. We were there September, 2013 and our pick up time was as early as 7a with drop off by 5:30p. We were restricted to the Boulder Basin and, initially, I thought this area wouldn't be large enough to hold our interest all day. Wrong! This area is so vast that there will be areas you won't even get to.

First of all pack a lunch. You could go back to the marina if you wanted but who really wants to waist time doing that. It's so much nicer to have a picnic on the boat (which comes with a canopy). When we picked up our boat the canopy was already up, we left it that way. The sun was pretty intense so the shade from time to time was nice. Second, don't expect an anchor. The boat doesn't come with one plus most of the areas in the lake are too deep anyway. There is one area called "sandy beach" which is just that. A sandy beach area in a cove that you can literally drive your boat onto the shore and jump out and swim. When we were there no one else was at the beach with us (it was a Tuesday so that might've had something to do with it?) Along this coast line there were several other areas similar to this that we could see as we sped past but this was the only one we utilized (we just like it so much). Third, the boat doesn't come with any type of rope. Not really sure what you would need it for unless you wanted to tie off to a rock. Down in the area called the "narrows" there are steep rock walls all around you ~ it's a magnificent area and it would be nice if you could just stop the boat and hang out there a while. Unfortunately, though, not being able to tether off to something makes this a bit difficult ~ I don't know, maybe if we had a rope we could've figured something out?!? Regardless, Lake Mead it more beautiful up close than you could ever imagine from just passing by. The water is crystal clear, as we swam you could see all the way down to your toes and beyond ~ amazing. The water was a bit brisk but give it a minute and it feels wonderful. Motor over to the Hoover Dam and sit for a while, it's beautiful, very picturesque. Bottom line this is a MUST! If you can, take the time to rent a boat and enjoy this lake for a day.

When you first see Lake Mead you think you are looking at a post card or painting., The water is so blue and the contrasting white mountains makes it hard to not just keeping staring! Lots of things to do here,,..picnic, swimming, and boating available, or just sit and enjoy the view!
Well worth the stop!

“Beautiful Lake, just enjoyed the panoramic view”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

We drove by this on our way to and from the Hoover Dam Bypass. We took some pictures of Lake Mead from the overlook, and enjoyed the panoramic view of the lake.

Given our trip priorities and budget, we did not feel it worth our time to spend an extended amount of time on the water since the boat and jet ski rentals are rather expensive (cost of airfare). Also, being on this lake (in the desert) with the sun reflections would have been very easy to get sun burnt and ruin the rest of our trip.

We stopped to see the beautiful lake, views and appreciate the purpose this lake provides the region.
