We rented a pontoon at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor. Super fun! We started out poorly, though. Their promotional paperwork says that you can rent a 5 person pontoon for $80 for 2 hours. But, when we got there with 5 people, the very unhappy clerk informed us that the brochures are incorrect and the smallest quantity was 4 people. She would not budge and also not accommodate. We had to get one for 8 ppl and pay an extra $20. The funny thing is that they also had brochures with the wrong information at the desk! No signs saying anything otherwise.
That aside, we had a very nice cruise around Lake Mead. We got to see the back side of Hoover dam and also see some beautiful landscape on a perfect day. We had packed a lunch and ate sandwiches and enjoyed the scenery.
The carp along the dock are also quite entertaining. They are beggars and amazing to see.
Stinky bathrooms.

We took the Lakeshore and Northshore Roads after a visit to the Hoover Dam and on our way to Valley of Fire State Park. I can't say much for the lake since we didn't spend time on it, but the drive is marvelous. You can't see the lake for most of the Northshore Road, so the views are of the mountains and desert and rock formations and it's a startling contrast to the abundance of Lake Mead. There are numerous outlooks and hiking trails if it's not too hot. Our kids enjoyed climbing some of the rock formations. The drive was a great complement to the dam and Valley of Fire and proved to be a trip highlight.

Lake Mead has wonderful sunsets so I would make sure to have a camera. There is also a dock with lots of huge carp that hangout so bringing popcorn to feed them is a lot of fun. The kids will love it. There is a dinner cruise which leaves from the dock also.

My family of 6 rented a boat for the day on Lake Mead and had one of the most relaxing and enjoyable days of vacation ever. We toured the Hoover Dam from the water, drove around a mostly quiet and peaceful lake, fished a little, and found our own private beach to float in. Although some would consider it expensive -a cooler of lunch and snacks for the day made it a pretty cheap excursion for all considering I spent more on a one hour show in Vegas for 6. Therefore I highly recommend.
