“Great bike trail”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

I have ridden parts of this bike trail numerous times and always feel rejuvenated from the fresh air and beauty (and exercise!) it provides. I can't wait for more sections to be completed, as it will be a fantastic stretch from Gooseberry to Tettegouche State Park, which I'm guessing will be about 24 miles.

“Bike trail with beautiful views, newly paved”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2013

While staying in Beaver Bay, rented Trek bikes from Cove Point Lodge and went out on the Gitchi-Gami trail to Split-Rock Lighthouse state park. The trail was beautiful off road and with gorgeous views of the Lake. On another day my son and husband only went as far as Gooseberry falls so cannot comment on the lower portion. However, it was well maintained and safe. There were benches to stop and rest and soak in the view. There were even bikers who would wave at you occasionally on highway 61 which was close to it at most points. My 10 year old son rode it 3 days straight because he enjoyed it so much.

“Gitchi Gami trail is not maintained adequately”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2012

Gitchi Gami baike trail should be renamed "Gonna Gimp-ya" trail

Drove 1000 miles to North shore of Lake Superior. While riding on Gitchi Gami trail south of Tofte, MN, near Temperance Traders cabins son crashed bike and broke arm. Found out from locals that 3-4 others have crashed in same area, resulting in various broken bones. Understandly riding a bike is at your own risk. However locals also said they had contacted MNDNR (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources) multiple times over 2-3 year period about this problem area. I guess the MNDNR has more important things to address than maintaining the existing sections of the Gitch Gami trail, instead they focus on lengthening the trail!!

Sometime in the past 2-3 years, MNDNR had cut 2 trenches in the asphalt trail in front of Temperance Traders cabins and decided a nice cheap fix was to replace with gravel. Gravel however washes away after every rain. When son crashed the dropoff was about 1-1.5in.
What made it additionaly dangerousous was that this 'cheap' fix was that it is at the bottom of a curved downhill grade. Orange cones were also hard to see as they were partially hidden by weeds.

Again, I know 'stuff' happens. But refusingt to adequately fix this section of the trail after multiple people had broken bones and reported it over last 2-3 years?? Well that is pathetic. I love the North Shore and the MNDNR's top notch state parks, explaining why I drive 1000 miles to get there. However the Gitchi Gami trail may have put an end to my vacations in Minnesota.

“Wonderful trail”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

The Gitchi Gami Trail between Gooseberry Falls and Beaver Bay is superb! Spectacular scenery can be viewed from the gently rolling hills. There was just a short stretch where the bike path was on a roadway, but there was no traffic so it was perfect.
