We had a gorgeous day to take the ferry to Peaks Island.......loved the ride. The island doesn’t have much to offer but is a pleasant enough walk about. We spent our time better driving the Maine Coast and seeing the pretty towns.

After waiting in the ferry line and missing the first fairy and having to push our way on to the next ferry, we thought this must be the experience of a lifetime. We were very underwhelmed when we walked around Peaks Island. Not much to do, no hiking trails, the three restaurants were bursting at the seams, and there were endless crowds of people roaming the island. It was the low light of our vacation in Portland. There are many other activities that are more interesting in the Portland area.

For just a few bucks, you can make your way over to Peak Island. Once on the island, I would recommend renting a golf cart or bike. If you're with a group, the golf cart may be a cheaper option, but usually need 24 hour advance reservations. I rented a bike, and some of the grades had me sweating.

The views along the island are great and some of the locals had things for sale along the path I was traveling. I got a cold lemonade from some kids for 50 cents a cup. Support your local business :)

There is a local grocery store with basics near the ferry. Also in the same area is a bar with music. Behind the bar is a food truck that has some delicious food. I had a pulled pork taco that was full of flavor, and very filling. Topped it off at the local ice cream shop before getting back on the ferry to downtown Portland.

We took the ferry over to Peaks Island. We had planned to rent a golf-cart, but they were fresh out. We arrived around 1PM. If you are certain you want a golf-cart, be sure to reserve in advance. Despite not being able to get our hands on a golf-cart, we did rent bikes. The island is very fun to navigate on bikes, and we were happy it played out this way for us. There are 2 hills - just walk the bikes up. Biking the entire island is about 4 miles. We went at an extremely leisurely pace stopping to see battery steele and look at the beaches and beautiful homes and were done in an hour. Insider tip - buy water - there are no places to purchase beverages once off the main strip. We were VERY thirsty. Also - be aware that there are only a few restaurants on the island, so you my have a bit of a wait to grab a bite and a brew.

We decided to take the ferry for an afternoon trip to Peakes Island from Portland on our third day out of five and almost immediately wished we had done this earlier. Even after reading that you you set up a reservation for a golf cart in advance we thought we might get lucky enough to crab one when we arrived on the Island. No such luck but taking note that a bike would be second best for our first tour we headed to Brads Bikes and I am so happy we did. The bikes we basic, many came to a basket, great for a purse or a sweater. We ended up stopping with great frequency so it take us about two hours to bike the 4 1/2 miles. Honestly it shouldn’t have taken us more than an hour but the scenery was gorgeous we snapped up photos all along the trip. Our last day and with an evening flight we took the ferry again out to Peakes and walked it. It’s just a stunning island am looking to try and rent a cottage for next summer!
