If you are not n a rush, this is a wonderful and interesting route. The small town shops and restaurants were like a step back in time.

So much of the coastline to see, not enough time! We ventured out to see many sights along the way! Most favorite was Kennebunkport and seeing President Bush and Laura Bush and his secret service entourage! Free port!

Maybe two quaint towns throughout. Views of the ocean were sporadic. Lots of bush and was disappointed it didnt go closer to the water more often.

Everything you have read is true about hwy 1 in Maine. It is great for seeing smaller and more local attractions, but it is also slower travel. You must decide what you are interested in doing: either getting to your destination quickly or exploring the beauty of the Maine coast. We drove from Portland to Bar Harbor and really enjoyed it. If you are going to complain about all of the small towns and having to slow down, why are you going this way? Just take the interstate.
We spent a whole day on this drive which takes 3 hours by the interstate. The only reason it was a great experience is because we took detours to check out local places like the giant stairs and lighthouses. If you are not going to leave the main hwy and visit these places, I also suggest you just take the interstate. There are a few towns to stop in, but you can do that on the interstate as well. But you will not be able to turn off the interstate to see the coastal towns and places from the interstate because it runs much further inland.

Don’t be in a hurry ! But you can make this trip as long or as short as you wish . Small towns full of shops and amazing seafood. All the lobster rolls you can eat and light houses every where . Sometimes you get off the beaten path and find your way back out by the water or exploring the sidewalks of another old harbor town. So many treasures and so many great places to stop and see. And don’t forget LL Bean . And hold on tight , when you get to Acadia National Park, be ready to be wowed ! It’s a trip worth taking .
