After a trip to Crested Butte our friends from Summit County recommended a drive on Cottonwood Pass. It provided spectacular views and was fairly easy to navigate in June. There were several great photo opportunities at the pull-off areas as well. Take your time and enjoy the ride!

If you like to take day hikes and are in the Buena Vista area, this is one hike you'll want to take. Cottonwood Pass is on the Continental Divide and the views can't be beat short of hiking a 14'er. It's a short 30 minute drive west from Buena Vista on CR 306. You have the option once there of hiking to the south, which offers excellent views, but is a boring hike and the one most taken since the path from start to finish (to the first peak) is mostly visible. Take the trail north and you won't be disappointed. We were able to run our hands through peak snow in July, and our hike lasted about 4 hours from start to finish. We could've opted to go a bit further but we wanted to get down before the afternoon storms since we got a late start. If you take the north trail from the parking lot, after a 5 - 10 minute walk you'll get to the first flat ground and you'll have the option of hiking "down" to the official Continental Divide trail. Instead, go "up" and follow the path along the peaks. Pack a lunch and be prepared to enjoy some of the best short hiking you've done.

Went from Buena Vista to Crested Butte in a rented Jeep out of Buena Vista. It was GREAT! The guy gave us numerious side trips to take and we saw so much more than taking the highway. Ghost towns, lakes and a great hamberger place in the middle of nowhere. FUN!

My husband and I have done the Skyline Drive out of Estes Park a few times and wanted a different experience in Colorado on this trip. Our destination was New Mexico but we wanted to travel to Colorado also without going so far. We enjoyed Cottonwood Pass, Cottonwood Lake and Cottonwood Hot Springs. We returned the day before we left to repeat the whole day. My husband caught trout at Cottonwood Lake also. The road was fine. We did not go on the west side of the pass. We also went to St. Elmo and returned back to Buena Vista after visiting St. Elmo on another day. Buena Vista has very good restaurants. We did not dislike any we went to. Mother's, Jan's, Bugaloo Billie's, Punky's, Casa de Sol. We made it our main destination for a week. We really enjoyed the area.
