“Longer journey Amtrak routes are better”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

Although this was a convenient and inexpensive way to travel, I preferred Amtrak's Coastal Starlight train. Although I took both trains for roughly the same amount of time (6hours) the Coastal Starlight had more room, a wonderful observation car, and a dining car. I also preferred Coastal Starlight's views (salinas to Santa Barbara) but i did enjoy Pacific Surfliners views as well. **take my advice, bring your own food unless you are a 10 year old, as the cafe car only stocks microwaved pizza, microwaved hot dogs, etc. They do serve beer and wine though.

“It's the journey, not the destination”
Reviewed March 7, 2012

Great way to go to San Diego. From Orange County, it's a little over 2 hours, making the trip only slightly longer than driving. Shorter even, if there's traffic on the freeways. And at $28, it's only a little bit more expensive, with gas prices being what they are.

Ah, but instead of watching for cops in the rearview mirror, you can be watching the sunset over the ocean as you pass by miles of pristine beaches... with a drink in your hand instead of gripping the steering wheel.

I could definitely get used to this!

“Don't take it for the scenery.”
Reviewed September 18, 2011

We took the pacific surfliner from Santa Barbara to San Diego. During the almost 6 hour trip we had no more than 45 minutes of actual ocean views. The business class seats were ok. In general amtrack employees are unhappy and disgruntled making any trip unpleasant.

“Awesome Scenic Surf views”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

I rode the Pacific Surfliner down to San Diego & roundtrip back to LA.
LAX>SAN I sat on the oceanside, I liked the changing of the scenery from industrial, suburban, Angels Stadium, open road with the 5, the coastline with surfing & camping.
SAN>LAX I sat on the mountainside, with views of beautiful seaside homes, some built in to the cliffs.
I sat in business class, with its wider seats. Was not able to access WiFi but still got internet functions on my smartphone. Disappointed with the snack service as I got a snack pack & ONE drink of choice (eight ounce can of soda)
On way back to LAX, was not informed about snack service but found the apple juice, pastries & USA Today in a cubby hole while on a trip to the restroom.
Overall it was a change of pace from flying on a plane.
I would do it again & also planning on the other routes offered.
